Who is Jacob?

One of the things that has puzzled us since the middle of Season 3 is: Who is Jacob?

We saw a glimpse of him in The Man Behind the Curtain. He was sat in a rocking chair and appeared to be wearing old clothes. From that theories circuled around that Jacob is from the ship that crashed on the Island, The Black Rock. That seems plausible giving the circumstances of living on this Island.

Then in the first episode of Season 4 we see Christian Shepherd in Jacob’s rocking chair and all others theories go out of the window. Apparantly, according to speculation, Christian IS Jacob.

I don’t believe this for a second, and here’s my reasoning:

  • Jacob in Season 3 was wearing very old clothes, Christian was wearing a suit.
  • Jacob to me seems like someone Ben has known for a very long time, he could possibly have come accross Jacob around the time he first met Richard. Christian would’ve only been on the Island for 3 months because of the time of the crash.

To me I think Ben has been “summoned” by Jacob for a very long time. The Others were very anxious also when Ben told them he was taking Locke to see Jacob. Why would they be anxious about someone Ben has only known for 3 months?

I do believe Christian was there in that room, but I don’t believe that he IS Jacob.

  1. Geoff Holland Says:

I’ve got a new theory about Jacob that’s come together after seeing Locke in the house and Christian Sheperd in the chair. I think he’s the one who’s been appearing to people on the island since the beginning. I think it was him who led Jack to water as Christian, that he was the one who appeared to Locke as Walt when Locke was in the grave, that he appeared to Hurley as Dave and that he was possibly the one who appeared as Ecko’s brother - maybe he even appeared as Charlie to Hurley in the institution? We know Charlie wasn’t imagined by Hurley, as another patient pointed him out.

If he is the one responsible for all these appearances then maybe he controls the black smoke or perhaps the black smoke is one of his forms - and it strikes me that whatever or whoever Jacob is, he’s the intelligence of the island made manifest, the force protecting it for whatever reason.

That is the one thing that makes you wonder, isn’t it? But reading what you’ve said it does make sense that that could be Jacob.

Another point that could back that up is the fact that Hurley said to Jack “It wants us to go back”. Maybe the It isn’t the Island, but the It is Jacob?

    Thanks for posting :)

  3. Faizan Says:

i have another theory…I am Jacob!!!! ahhahaahhaahahah

  4. admin Says:

    No no… I am ;)

  5. Rebecca Says:

The farmer that Kate stays with briefly in season 1?

  6. Grace Says:

What about Aaron is Jacob? Bunch of weird time jumps going on…

  7. Lucas bland Says:

Richard is jacob. he dose not age at all.

  8. Scott T Says:

I think jacob is the black guy from Fringe.. He ws the one that told Locke to go on the walkabout that got him to the island. He is very misterious, yet knowledable…I would put my money on him!

  9. Samuel Says:

My believe is this.Taking into consideration of all the time travels that is going on, we have seen Widmore, we have seen Faraday’s Mum, I honestly believe Jacob is Locke

  10. Rea Morgan Says:

The Black guy? Matthew Abadock (Not sure about spelling.) No, no. He works for Windmore. Of course, you may have posted that even beforethat Episode where we see him. I think Jacob has yet to be discovered completely. I don’t think we have seen him except for that little glimse we got during episode 20, 3rd Season. The Man Behind the Curtain. I am inclined to agree with the first theory- admin’s thoery. Not that you are Jacob, lol.

  11. Big Jake Says:

I think Jack is Jacob. You have that little family tete a tete going on in the cabin with Christian and Claire, she is not only not alarmed by the situation, she is laughing and coy. Christian feels confident that he can speak for Jacob, as a father would speak on his son’s behalf. The Shepperd family is somehow at the center of all of this, and we are thrown off the Jack is Jacob trail by the fact that the Jack we have come to known does not buy into the metaphysical island mumbo-jumbo. That does not rule out him embracing it at sometime in the future or past. He is traveling in time, kind of “unstuck” in time like Billy Pilgrim. Anything can happen.
    “Poo-tee-weet”?

  12. Shawn Irish Says:

I think Daniel Farraday is Jacob.

We saw Daniel Farraday go pack with Sawyer and co. to 1974. By the time 1977 rolls around he is gone withougt explanation. My guess is he leaves the Dharama village and meets up with the others. He convinces them he is some powerful supremem being by knowing the future and his mother Elloise Hawking.

Then Farraday somehow harnesses the power of the island and is trying to use it to change events so the Charlotte never dies.

I think this makes sense cause Farrady knows so much about time travel.

  13. Carissa Says:

    The smoke is jacob

  14. Katy Says:

I think either Daniel Farraday is Jacob, he seems to know more about the island than anyone or agreeing with big Jake that Jack is Jacob but leaning more towards Daniel. Why else would his mother be so insistent that he return just to be killed? and we know that the island can bring people back so maybe he comes back to become Jacob, his destiny.

  15. lizzy Says:

I think that Jacob is like the “god” in the island. And that he can manifest in many forms. thats why we see so many dead people caming “alive.” they are all Jacob. Locke cant be Jacob cause he wants to kill Jacob. Ben cant cause he had never seen him.

  16. Jen Says:

If Jacob is the person who is protraying the dead people than that means right now all this time since Locke came back to the island he has been Locke. Since Locke as with Christian and Charlie died! Unlikely.

  17. Adam Says:

    I think Christian is Jacob.

  18. Adam Says:

    ….. or Aaron!

  19. Lockhy Says:

In fact, the man who appears as Christian is Esaú, and he has been manipulating Locke in order to find the Loophole and kill Jacob.
Jacob is the good man and he does not show himself openly to Ben, since he asks that he be followed blindly.

  20. LIzk Says:

I think Daniel Farraday is Jacob. Since when he was with Charlotte in Season 5, Charlotte said the man that told her when she was young to never come back to the island or she’ll die was Daniel, then there’s no reason for him not to be Jacob. He also knows more about the island then anybody else, he also vanished in the middle of season 5 with no explanation…And he got back in 1977, one of his parents is Widmore, which he confessed to Locke that he was on the island before, so what could stop Daniel from being Jacob? ( not to mention he doesn’t age prior to the conversation with Charlotte in season 5)

  21. Marlon Sandro Says:

I think nobody knows who Jacob is, not even the writers. This is my suspicion altogether about many things in Lost. It seems they have everything figured out, but personally I think they´ve created the atmosphere were “anythingcan happen”. Once you do this, well…you can achieve anything you can imagine!

The question is how are they gonna tie all the loose ends when (if) this comes to an end…

  22. Darrel Says:

Well we are half way through the final season. And anyone who has been following and keeping score knows that The man in black/esau/smokie/christian/walt/dave and goodwins wife are one in the same. He and Jacob have been on the island much longer then Richard Alpert or anyone else for that matter. In fact Smokie always appears after the whispering. Go back to season one and check for yourself. Which brings me to a point from season four (something nice to come home to) when the 6 are off island (supposedly). Jack comes to visit Hugo in the hospital and Hugo says we never left the island. Shortly after that we see Jack at the hospital doing a diagnosis in his office when he hears the smoke alarm go off and sees Christain immediately afterwards. AWe know that Smoky is trapped on the island and can’t leave until he finds a way to kill Jacob. So this is a very credible hypostheis by Hugo. Go all the way back to walkabout when Locke is crunchng numbers at his desk for the box company he works for. When he hits enter the calculator makes the exact same noise as the smoke creature. Finally someone above suggested that Aaron is Jacob this is not true. We know that Aaron is the key to the series (or so the fortune teller that Claire when to see in season 1 claims. Skip all the way to season 6 when smoky locke persuades Sawyer to join him. He sees a adolescent blonde teen who tells Smoky Locke, you know the rules. We also know that one of the oceanic 6 is destined to replace Jacob. Kates name isn’t among the 6 names in the cave smoky and Sawyer enter. We also know that Sayid has sided with the dark side so hes eliminated. And Locke is dead and is now usurped by smoky so hes eliminated. Sawyer has deferred from choosing, that just leave Jin Sun Hugo and Jack and Arron (it makes perfect sense it bbe Aaron even thopugh his mother is Jacks half sister and has a different last name and Christians last name is Shepard. In ancient days the last name of the father (even indirectly toomk precedent over the maternal (I know its not PC by todays standards, but I’m talking ancient days). Hence Aarons last name would be Shepard indirectly (Christina Shepard to Claire Littleton to Aaroon Who has not carried a last name as of this point. Plus Jacob is blonde and Aaron is blonde whicjh traditionally seen as omens of light and hence good. Sound far fetched? guess we weill know at the last episode

  23. Darrel Says:

An ammendment to my last post. I meant to say that The blonde kid Smoky/Locke encounters is actually Aaron at some point from the future Since time travel ran rampant in season 5. Hence we can presume Smoky doesn’t get off the island since jacob reveals In Ab Arteno to Richard that if smoky ( evil/Malevolence/darkness/thedevil is successful he will infect the whole world)

  24. Darrel Says:

Jacob as we now see is none of the above choices.
