The Constant - Lost Season 4 Episode 5 Review
Written by admin on March 8, 2008
It’s been a week since I saw this episode so I will try my best to remember bits whilst writing this review.
So, this episode saw Desmond and Sayid in the helicopter and they hit a little turbulance. Desmond panics and holds on tightly to his seat and then for some reason Desmond is now back in 1996 in the army. He has no recolection of what happened and seems to think that the helicopter journey was a dream.
Later on in 1996 he is doing pushups when bam - he’s back in the helicopter again just where he was a couple of minutes ago. Only this time Desmond still thinks it’s 1996 and doesn’t remember anything or anyone and is shocked at what’s happening to him.
When they land on the freighter it happens again - Desmond is back in 1996 right where he left from when he came back in the helicopter. He has no idea what’s happening to him. But before he could really have time to think about it, he’s right back on the frieghter again!
The people on the frieghter tell him he’ll take him to see the doctor and they lock him inside a room with a man who claims the same thing is happening to him! This man is… George Minkowski! The guy who Jack spoke to when the losties initiated rescue! What’s happened to him in between speaking to Jack and now?!
Back to the island and Jack is still worried about not hearing back from Sayid yet. It’s been over a day since the helicopter left and it should’ve only taken 40 minutes to get to the frieghter! Dan tells him that his perception of time isn’t what he thinks, but before Dan had time to elaborate Sayid calls Jack on the sat phone.
Sayid tells Jack that something strange has happened to Desmond, and Dan immediately demands to speak to Desmond. He seems to know what’s happening to him.
When Dan speaks to Desmond he asks him what year he thinks it is. Desmond completely flabbergasted by such an idiotic question he answers “It’s 1996!”. Everyone looked very confused by now. Dan thought for a moment then told Desmond that the next time he goes back to go to Oxford and look for him. Past Dan will be able to help Desmond.
Is Desmond about to change the future?!
When Desmond goes back to 1996 he goes to see past Dan, and Dan tells him he needs a constant. Someone or something that he is close to in 1996, but must also exsist in 2004. Desmond could only think of one person, naturally it was Penny. When he tried calling Penny though, her number had been disconnected.
Desmond decided to go visit Penny’s father, a man who clearly hates Desmond. Surprisingly though, Mr Widmore gives Desmond Penny’s new address. Why he would do that I’m unsure.
Back on the island and Sayid and Desmond are locked in the room with George Minkowski. Sayid says he needs to get to a communications room, but George tells him someone trashed that place 2 days ago and all the phone lines are down. George says he can show them where the room is so Sayid can try to fix one of the phones.
In the communications room George has another back-in-time experience and it’s clear he’s had one too many as he dies. Desmond clearly panics as if he doesn’t get in touch with Penny in 2004 the same thing is going to happen to him!
Sayid notices the calander and sees that it is Christmas Eve 2004. Desmond makes a mental note of that.
When he goes back to 1996 he goes to see Penny. She clearly doesn’t want to see him as he broke her heart, but fortunately she relented and let him in. Desmond asks for her phone number and tells her she cannot change it. He tells her he’s going to call her on Christmas Eve 2004! Penny obviously confused about this gives Desmond her phone number just so he’d leave.
When he does leave he gets back to the frieghter and Sayid has fixed a phone! Desmond can now call Penny! She takes a while to answer but when she does it’s a great lovey-dovey moment :) Penny tells Desmond she knows about the island and she’s been doing some research on it. They don’t get much chance to catch up as the phone cuts out, but it’s enough to save Desmond, and his consciousness is now back in 2004. Yay!
Back to the island and Dan is flicking through his note books when he sees something that says “If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant!”. Had he written that already or had Desmond changed the future and that had only appeared after Desmond had visited Dan in 1996?! Clearly Daniel Faraday knows alot about the mysteries of the island - I’m guessing he’s going to play a huge part in discovering them.
All in all, a fantastic episode! Desmond episodes are always exciting, and even though it’s confused the hell out of me, I loved it all the same! :)

Thanks. I think as of now it’s obvious there will be time travel in the show… and I can’t wait! :)
