Meet Kevin Johnson - Lost Season 4 Episode 8 Review
Written by admin on April 1, 2008
This was the episode we had been waiting for all season. Ever since we knew Michael was set to make his return we anticipated just how and why he would come back, and when it was revealed that Ben had a spy on the freighter we all speculated that it would be Michael, but still unsure if it would actually be him. And even after episode 7 when we knew Michael was on the freighter we still questioned if he was actually the spy.
Meet Kevin Johnson - the episode were we found out just how Michael ended up on that freighter - the wait was over!
The episode begins at camp Locke and everyone is having a group meeting where Locke reveals why he has let Ben go, and who exactly is his spy on the freighter. Needless to say, the group aren’t impressed that the guy who is working for Ben is the same guy who killed Ana Lucia and Libby, and conned Saywer, Kate and Jack to the Others camp to be locked up - whilst Micheal was free to leave the island.
When Ben has a moment alone with Alex he tells her to head for the temple where it is safe. Danielle agrees with Ben and says she will go with Alex and Karl to the temple. Is the temple really a safe place?! We haven’t seen any of the other Others since they went there - maybe the smoke monster got them?!
On the freighter Sayid is obviously itching to “ask” Micheal some questions (ie. have some torture time!) and he and Desmond find a chance to question Michael alone. Obviously Michael can’t take on Sayid so he gives in and tells them what happened to him.
Cut to Michaels flash back and he’s in his apartment, all alone, seemingly depressed, and writing a letter. He is then seen outside getting into a car and pins this letter to his jacket. He speeds off and deliberately drives into a wall! He obviously feels no reason to live anymore - but why? Where is Waaaaaalt?!
Luckily for Michael he survives what should’ve been a fatal crash, and we see him wake up in hospital, with very few bruises. He hears a nurse come in and ask if he’d like any blankets and woah - it’s Libby! This turns out to be an hillucination, probably a cause of Michaels guilt for killing Libby.
When Michael gets out of hospital (which doesn’t seem to take that long considering he was in a near fatal car crash!) he goes to see his mum, who now is looking after Waaaaalt! Apparantly Waaaaaalt doesn’t want to see his dad again. Poor Michael! ;)
Micheal goes to a pawn shop and swaps Jins watch for a gun and some bullets! After his first attempt of killing himself failed Michael feels the need to try again, only this time he is interupted by a “friendly” face! That’s right! It’s Mr Friendly! (Wait, didn’t he die?! Oh, that’s right, it’s a flash back!).
Tom tells Michael that he will be unable to kill himself because the Island won’t let him! Oo er missus! Tom ponders about why Michael would want to kill himself after leaving the Island with Waaaaaalt - but then he realises - Micheal told Waaaaaalt about what he did to get him out of the clutches of the Others and off the Island. So now Waaaaaalt hates him (Well… duh!) ;)
Tom tells Micheal he needs his help. Obviously Micheal doesn’t give in that easily so Tom tells him he’s staying at some posh hotel and to come by if he changes his mind.
So, now cut to Micheal and he’s on to attempt 3! This time he pulls the trigger, but nothing happens! He looks at how many bullets there are in the gun and it’s completely full! Just before trying for a fourth time he sees a news bulletin on the TV about finding the wreckage of Flight 815! That must be a very surreal moment for Micheal, no?
It was enough to convince him to go see Mr Friendly. Tom tells him he needs to go on the freighter and kill everyone on board! We all know Micheal is no stranger to killing people, so he was an obvious choice, right? Tom convinces Micheal by telling him that he will be saving his friends on the Island and that Waaaaaalt will be proud of him for doing so.
Oh, and he also shows him pictures of a grave yard with empty graves that have been dug up which were used in the fake wreckage of Flight 815. Oh, and it’s Charles Widmore who setup the fake wreckage. (Hmmm… and the Captain said it was Ben! Who shall we believe?!).
Tom hands Micheal a fake passport and tells him he shall be called Kevin Johnson.
We now see Micheal boarding the freighter and Naomi tells him a box has arrived for him and that it will be taken to his room on board. Micheal walks passed Miles, and Miles bemusingly says “You’re name isn’t Kevin”. I wonder if Miles actually knows that or he’s just pulling Micheals chain? Either way, Micheal didn’t really know how to react to that!
Later Micheal goes to a control room with the box that arrived for him, and he opens what looks to be a bomb. He inputs the number, and goes to press the button that says “Execute” (spooky) when he sees Libby again who tells him not to do it. When Libby dissapears again Micheal decides to go ahead and press the button anyway - which turns out to leave Micheal a little note that says “Not Yet”. Hmmm, the Others love playing little games don’t they?
Later in his room Minkowski comes to see Micheal and tells him he has a phone call from Waaaaaaaaalt! “Waaaaaaaaaalt’s on the phone?!”. Micheal is quick to go speak to him even though Waaaaaaalt has no idea he’s on the freighter and that he’s changed his name to Kevin Johnson (or does he?!). That doesn’t matter, cause it turns out to be Ben pulling Micheals chain!
Ben tells him he wants to gather lists of all the people on board. Michael asks why the bomb wasn’t a bomb, and Ben tells him that there are good people on board and that he doesn’t believe in killing good people (funniest thing I’ve ever heard! ;) ).
So now we know how Ben knew all about Charlotte and co. Although, I think we figured that out already! ;)
Back to real time and Sayid is obviously not impressed that Micheal is now working for Ben (if only you knew the future Sayid!) he takes Micheal to the captain and rats him out! We don’t see any repurcussion of this in this episode, but I have a huntch that the Captain already knew about Micheal, and even possibly the Captain is working for Ben too? We won’t find out for a good few weeks though (damn you clever Lost writers for the anticipation! ;) ).
Back to the Island and we see Danielle, Alex and Karl on their field trip. They stop to take a break and Karl says “I have a bad feeling about this”. Eeeek, don’t say that Karl! But before we could even think “you’ll be fine Karl”, he gets shot in the chest and appears to die! Alex is obviously in distress but Danielle tells her they need to go and get away from there where they were getting shot at. But before they could run anyway, Danielle gets shot too!
Now, Karl getting shot I was surprised about but not too much that I didn’t believe it, but then Danielle gets shot too and my jaw hits the ground! They can’t kill off an important character like Danielle! But I guess we’re just going to have to wait to see if she really is dead!
Fantastic episode!

Haha! I love your use of “Waaaaaalt” in this post. ;-)
And btw, I can’t wait to see the temple!

It wouldn’t feel right calling him Walt hehe :)
Yes the Temple is something I’m looking forward to too!
I heard the actor who played Richard is coming back to the show after his recent one got the axe, so that’s good news (for us Lost fans anyway!) :)
