The Shape of Things to Come - Lost Season 4 Episode 9 Review
Written by admin on May 9, 2008
One of the things I love about LOST is the shock factor. I’ve never been one for spoilers and am proud to say that I’ve avoided 99.9% of spoilers since the show started back in 2004, but having a ten day delay to the US was excrutiatingly difficult for me because I had to avoid all the LOST forums and sites I visit because I knew there’d be discussions about the latest episode, and there was no doubt that I didn’t want to know about it.
This episode provided one of the most shocking moments in LOST and I am so glad to say I didn’t see that one coming! Poor Alex!
It has been a few days since I saw the episode so this review may not be correct with the order of things that happened in the episode, but here goes…!
So we see Ben lying in the dessert looking like he’d just landed there on his back - he suffered some sort of injury to his arm but just how exactly? He is wearing a Dharma jacket and is soon approached by two men on horses speaking to him in a foreign language. They try to communicate with each other but the two guys obviously don’t want Ben around, but Ben soon gets the upper hand and shoots one of the men, and knocks out the other. Hmm, still evil then Ben?! But is it a Flash Forward or a Flash Back??
Back to real-time and the body of the Frieghter Doctor has been discovered on the beach with his throat slit open - it looks to be murder, but what really happened to him? Daniel tells everyone that the Doctor was fine the last time he saw him, to which Jack asked “when was that?”. Daniel says something about “when” being relative.
Back to Ben and we discover that this is infact a Flash Forward, but what was strange was how we found out. He asked a lady at the hotel he was checking into what year it was. It seems strange for someone to ask what year it is which makes me assume that Ben can somehow travel in time. Whether or not he can travel back in time is another question as if he could, wouldn’t he go back and save Alex from her untimely death?
Ben looks at a TV screen and we see Sayid talking to reporters saying he just wants to bury his wife in peace. HIS WIFE?! Needless to say I was a bit confused at this point ;)
Back at campe Locke, Alex is forced to unlock the barriers to let her captors in to the barracks. The phone rings at Locke’s place and a code is repeated, Locke asks Ben what the code means and Ben is obviously worried as he knows just what it means - it means “they’re here!”.
Ben tells everyone to go to his house and lock themselves in. Sawyer goes on a mission to get a sleeping Claire out of her house and in the process 3 of the “non” Losties get killed by shots coming from the jungle. Well that’s one way of getting rid of the extras! What’s surprising is that Sawyer was stood within inches of the 3 “non” Losties and didn’t even get hit! But then the Lost writers would be making a big mistake killing off Sawyer ;)
When everyone is in the house they block off the doors and windows. Miles is sent to give Ben a walkie-talkie to communicate with the captors. Ben talks with them and is adamant he is not going to give himself up, which makes the captors use Alex to convince him. The main captor (I’ve forgotten his name!) puts a gun to Alex’s head and tells Ben he will shoot her. Ben doesn’t believe him and trys to convince him that Alex means nothing to him. This was the wrong move by Ben because… bang! He’s shot Alex and the look on Bens face was of sheer shock and sadness. I think that was the look on everyones face watching the show because I wasn’t expecting that! I was half expecting Roussaeu to come and save the day, but that was not meant to be.
Anyway, Ben locks himself in his secret room and opens a strange looking door that has writing and drawings on it. Unfortunately, that’s all we saw of this room, but later on we find out why he went in there… I think ;)
Back to Bens Flash Forward and he’s watching Sayid carry the coffin of his dead wife, which we now know is Nadia from a photograph on the coffin. Sayid looks directly and Ben who is taking photo’s of him from a balcony, and Ben quickly rushes away, but not before getting caught by Sayid. When Sayid realised who it was he was shocked. Ben told him that Charles Widmore had setup the murder of Nadia and that her murderer was watching the service also. Sayid was shocked by this and questioned why Widmore would do such a thing.
Just why would Charles Widmore kill Nadia? Hmm…
Later in the episode Ben follows Nadia’s murderer but he knows Ben is following him and as soon as he gets a chance pulls him to one side to ask him who he is. Ben tells him he has a message for Charles Widmore, but before Ben could tell him what it was Sayid shoots Nadia’s murderer! This was obviously no coincidence. Ben is being his old manipulative self and without knowing it, Sayid asks who’s next? At least we know now why Sayid was working for Ben in Sayid’s episode “The Economist”.
Back to camp Locke, Ben comes out of his secret room and tells them that in a few minutes they have to go outside and run for the trees. We see now why Ben went into his secret room, it was to conjur up the smoke monstor (or at least that’s what it looks like!). The smoke monstor quickly kills all the captors waiting outside and everyone runs for the trees to safety. Ben says his goodbye to Alex who was left outside the house.
When Ben meets with Locke and the others a little later on Sawyer, Claire, Miles and Hurley decide to go back to the beach. Locke couldn’t let Hurley go though as Hurley is the only one now who knows where Jacobs cabin is, and Locke and Ben need to see Jacob so he can tell them what to do next! So Locke pulls a gun on Sawyer! It was a little dramatic, but Hurley agrees to go with Ben and Locke, whilst the others head for the beach.
Are we going to see Jacob soon?! I hope so…
Back at the beach, Daniel sends a morse code to the people on the Frieghter asking what happened to the doctor. They receive a message back and Daniel tells everyone that they didn’t mention the doctor but the helicopter will be coming back tommorrow. Bernard, unbeknown to Daniel and co., knows morse code and tells everyone that Daniel lied, and that the message they receive back was actually “What are you talking about? The doctor is fine”.
Seems to be that the freighter is in the past? And the doctor hasn’t been killed yet? Or were they referencing an ill doctor Jack? It seems strange to me they’d ask What happened to the doctor, when the islands doctor, Jack, has been feeling a little ill of late?
Anyway, Jack asks Daniel if they were ever there to rescue them, to which Daniel replied “no”. Jack seemed to be keeling over in pain and I think the realisation of Locke being right all long is now kicking in.
Back to Bens Flash Forward and he is now in London at a posh hotel and breaks into a room that Charles Widmore is in. They have a deep discussion about the Island and their obvious fight to keep it. Charles asks Ben if he’s going to kill him but Ben says that they both know they can’t do that. So is this going back to Michaels Flash Back where Tom told him the Island won’t let him die? Maybe the Island won’t let Charles Widmore die? I think Charles Widmore has a deeper connection with the Island than we first thought.
Ben tells Charles that he changed the rules and that he murdered Alex, and in turn he is going to kill his daughter - he is going to kill Penelope!!
And just what does that mean for poor Desmond?! Is he alive and well and with Penny, or did he never leave the Island?
As always, so many questions, but I always look forward to each episode to get a little bit closer to solving the puzzle!
I haven’t seen episode 10 or 11 yet as they haven’t aired in the UK yet so if you post a comment, please keep that in mind and the fact that I am not a spoilery person. Thank you! :)
