Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.

Character Episode: Multi Episode (Jack, Kate & Charlie)

JackKateCharlie

Quick Recap On Flashback:
The Flashback sees the events that happened on the plane from 3 different points of view (Jack, Kate & Charlie).

Quick Recap On Island:
Jack wakes in the middle of the jungle, injured and bewildered. Despite this, he picks himself up and heads toward the beach to help as many injured survivors as possible.

Jack

After he’s helped out, he finds himself a spot by himself to tend to his wounds, when Kate appears out of nowhere. Kate helps Jack by stitching his wound.

Kate

During their first night, the sound of the smoke monster can be heard and everyone on the beach is a little disturbed by it.

Jack and Kate decide to head for the cockpit to see if they can find a transceiver and are joined by Charlie.

At the cockpit they find the Pilot alive and he tells them that they were off course when the plane crashed and people will be looking for them in the wrong place. He gives them the transceiver before being “grabbed” and pulled out of the cockpit by the smoke monster.

Pilot

Jack, Kate, and Charlie make a run for it, but somehow Jack gets a little lost on the way. Kate and Charlie head back to the cockpit to find Jack and notice a body up in the trees. It’s the body of the Pilot, which Jack points out when he greets them.

At the beach, Kate explains they have a transceiver but it doesn’t work and asks if anyone can help. Sayid offers, and later thinks he has fixed it but tells Kate he won’t be able to get a signal at the beach - they will have to go on a hike.

Sayid and Kate are joined by Charlie, Sawyer, Shannon and Boone and quickly come into trouble when they come accross… a polar bear? Sawyer has a gun and shoots it.

Sawyer

When they reach a high point of the Island Sayid switchs on the transceiver to see if it works, and to his surprise he is getting a signal. Unfortunately, there is something blocking it, and when he tunes into the message it is a message that has been looping for 16 years.

The message is that of a French woman, and Shannon being able to speak a little French, translates it to “I’m alone now… they’re all dead… it killed them all”.

Shannon

The episode ends with Charlie asking what everyone wants to know… “Where are we?”.

Things we learn:

  • Jack is a doctor
  • Kate is a fugitive
  • Charlie is a heroin addict
  • Sayid worked for the Republican Guard
  • Claire is 8 months pregnant
  • Shannon and Boone are brother and sister

What mysteries are unveiled?

  • The Smoke Monster
  • The Polar Bear

Questions?

  • How did Jack manage to find himself in the middle of the jungle away from everyone on the beach?
  • How did Charlie end up on the beach when we know he was sat near the cockpit when the plane crashed?
  • Kate has been on the run for three years so how has she managed to sustain a good friendship with someone called Beth?

Easter Eggs?

  • The tennis shoe being hung in the tree, perhaps?

Things worth noting:

  • When Kate is asking Charlie if they’ve ever met before Charlie makes a comment along the lines of “You think we’ve met before? That’ll be very unlikely”. Given the numberous connections the Losties have with each other I thought this line was clever.

The Numbers:

  • Jack tells the Pilot there are 48 Survivors.
  • He also tells the Pilot it has been 16 hours since the plane crashed.
  • The French womans message has been playing for 16 years.
  • Claire tells Jack she is 8 months pregnant.

    Hi, Emzi

Swung by here having seen you around L-T and leaving comments on my blog. (All read, all appreciated, though by no means considered necessary!)

Nice site you’ve got here. Though given your occupation I should think that ought to be the case!

I am impressed with the task you’ve taken on starting with this Pilot episode. You’ve got a long road ahead of you! Stick with it. I’ll be reading, and looking around the rest of your site when I have more time. Always good to have a new Lost site to get stuck into, especially in these Lost-free days.

(By the way, I wrote a little piece about by the white tennis shoe in my blog:

Feel free to have a look; not sure if it’ll present something you didn’t know already or not!)

Hi, thanks for your comment :)

I enjoy reading Lost blogs and think yours is very interesting, so I figure it only right I leave a comment or two :)

It may take a while to get all reviews up to Season 4 written, but I’m hoping by the time I’ve finished it’ll bring me up nicely to the start of Season 5 (and hopefully the wait wouldn’t have felt so long!) :)

I’ll take a look at your White Tennis Shoe article now :)

    Thanks again for the comment!
