All the Best Cowboys have Daddy Issues - Lost Season 1 Episode 11 Review
Written by admin on October 21, 2008Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.
Character Episode: Jack
Quick Recap On Flashback:
Jack is in surgery operating on a woman who had been in a car accident. Jack is trying desperately to save her, whilst in the corner his father, Christian, is telling him to “call it”. Jack looks angrily at his father and says “you call it”.

Later, in the operating room, Jack and his father are arguing about how the woman died, and Jack tells his father that he was asked to join the OR by one of the nurses because his hands were shaking during surgery. Christian tried to brush off that claim but Jack, hinting at his fathers alcoholism, asked him how many drinks he’d had at lunch.
A few days later, Jack visits his father in his office and Christian gives him something to sign to say that the woman who died, died from the injuries of the car accident. Jack at first refuses to sign it, but after a guilt-trip from his father, gives in and signs it.

Later, in the hospital corridor Jack sees his father speaking to the womans husband. After asking a nurse what they’re talking about, he finds out that he is going to sue the hospital.
When the case is brought to the boardroom, Christian is very specific about what happened and seems content with his story. When asked if he was aware of the womans pregnancy Christian confirms and says that it was very early on in the pregnancy and that the mother was their main priority.
This seems to set something off in Jack, as Jack seems unaware of the pregnancy and seems sure that his father wasn’t either, so he tells everyone he needs to revise his statement, and tells them that he was asked to take over in OR because his father was operating under the influence of alcohol.

Quick Recap On Island:
At the caves, Hurley tells everyone that it is Ethan who wasn’t on the plane. After a few minutes Jack realises that Charlie isn’t there and he knows that he went to find Claire. Jack panics and heads off into the jungle to look for them, followed by Locke.
After they’ve found signs of a struggle, Locke tells Jack that they should go back to form a search party, but Jack is impatient and wants to know the direction of where they went so he can continue searching. Locke lets Jack go off on his own while he goes back to the caves.

At the caves, Kate tells Locke that she wants to help, and surprisingly Boone offers his helping hand aswell. Michael wants to help but Locke tells him they have all the help they need which seems to annoy Michael as he tells him he will set up his own search party.
Locke, Kate and Boone soon catch up to Jack who seems to have been going round in circles, and they head off to follow the tracks.
Later, they come accross two different tracks which Kate thinks Ethan made to fool them. They split up into two groups so that both tracks can be followed: Jack with Kate, and Boone with Locke.
While Locke and Boone are following their track Locke stops them and declares that it will start raining in 1 minute. Boone seems intrigued by this and, surprise surprise, it started to rain.

On the other track, Jack and Kate find themselves climbing up a hill after Jack hears whispers and what he thinks to be Claire’s screams. With the rain and the mud it caused Jack to fall down the hill where he is met by an angry Ethan who attacks him and tells him if he doesn’t stop following them he will kill one of them. He hits Jacks head on a rock and when Kate goes to see if he’s ok she thinks he imagined seeing Ethan.

When they finally get up the hill they find Charlie tied up by his neck to a tree. They both try frantically to get him down and when they do Jack desperately tries to revive him. After many attempts he seems to give up and Kate is in tears at the fact that Charlie has died. A few moments later though, Jack tries again as he can’t seem to accept that he has died. Luckily, Charlie did come round because of Jacks determination.

Later that night Charlie is at the caves and Jack is trying to question him about what happened. Charlie says he can’t remember, but then says “All they wanted was Claire”.
Locke and Boone are still out in the jungle obviously not following any track anymore, when Boone says he’s going to make his way back. Locke throws a torch at him to use, but it falls onto something metal that is in the ground.

Things we learn:
- Jacks father was an alcoholic.
- The Others only wanted Claire.
Things worth noting:
- In a future episode, Desmond tells Charlie that he is going to die. Desmond sees visions of how it will happen and he has saved Charlie a couple of times, but the universe has a habit of course correcting. If Jack hadn’t been so determined to save Charlie should that have really been his time? Would the course correcting have started from this point?
