Character Episode: Claire

Quick Recap On Flashback:
Claire is at home with her boyfriend, Thomas, and has just taken a pregnancy test. They both seem panicked by the possibility that she may be pregnant. When the test is revealed as positive they’re both a bit shook up, but Thomas comes round to the idea of being a father and tells Claire that they can do this.

A couple of days later Claire goes to see a psychic with her friend. His name is Richard Malkin. He picks up on Claires pregnancy but then stops the process as it seems he has picked up on something bad. He doesn’t tell Claire what though and asks her to leave.

A few months later, with Claire showing an obvious baby bump, she is putting up drapes in her apartment when Thomas arrives. He seems annoyed with Claire and when Claire asks him what’s wrong he tells her he cant do it and breaks up with her.

A week later Claire visits Richard Malkin again who agrees to do another reading. He picks up on something bad again and tells her that grave danger surrounds the baby if it isn’t brought up by Claire. He seems adamant about this and is aggressive when she tells him she will be giving the baby up for adoption.

Richard Malkin continues to harrass Claire via phone calls telling her that the baby needs to be brought up by her, until one night he tells her he has another plan. She puts the phone down on him though before hearing what he has to say.

When Claire goes to sign the adoption papers she asks the couple who will be adopting her baby if they can sing “Catch a Falling Star” to the baby as her dad used to sing it to her when she was little. The couple happily agree and are anxious for Claire to sign the papers. When she attempts to write her signature the pen doesn’t work, and when a second pen didn’t work Claire decides not to go through with it.

She went to see Richard Malkin to hear what his plan was. He told her there was a couple in L.A. who want to adopt the baby and that the baby would be safe in their care. Claire was obviously confused as to why he’s been telling her that only she should raise the baby and now he’s changed his mind. He gives her a ticket for Flight 815 and he tells her it must be that flight.

Quick Recap On Island:

Claire has a bad dream whilst sleep walking, where she is walking through the jungle following the sounds of a baby crying. She no longer has a bump and there appears to be blood on her top where her bump was. She comes accross Locke who tells her “He was your responsibility but you gave him away, Claire. Everyone pays the price now.” She seems confused and runs off to a cot in the middle of the jungle. She unravels the blankets to find her baby, only to find a pool of blood. She starts to scream.

Out of her dream, Charlie is trying to calm her down as she keeps screaming and screaming, and when she finally does calm down he notices her hands are covered in blood. She’d been so scared that she dug her finger nails into her skin.

The next day, Charlie takes a cup of tea to Claire and tells her that he thinks about her being alone on the island without any friends, and that he could be her friend. She isn’t really in the mood for talking but she appreciates the sentiment.

That night, someone tries to inject Claire’s stomach with something whilst she’s sleeping, but she wakes up and starts screaming. She tells everyone that someone was trying to hurt her baby, but she didn’t see who it was.

Hurley has a discussion with Jack and tells him that he’s going to put a list together of who everyone is and where everyone “lives”, because nobody knows who everybody is. Jack agrees to the idea.

On the beach, Jack is speaking with Kate and Charlie and suggests that Claire is just under stress and that the incident was just her imagination. Charlie took offence and immediately stuck up for her because she was terrified.

In the jungle, Hurley asks Ethan a couple of questions for the list he’s putting together. Ethan asks what it’s for and seems happy with Hurley’s answer of “thought it would be a good idea”.

At the caves Jack speaks with Claire and wants to give her some medication. When Claire realises that Jack thinks she’s just making the whole thing up, she grabs her stuff and walks off, making her way back to the beach. Charlie arrives just as she is walking off and asks Jack what he said to her. Charlie follows her to make sure she is ok.

At the beach, Hurley is speaking with Boone about the list, and Boone mentions the plane manifest that has the list of survivors on it. Hurley thinks it will be really useful and goes to get it off the one man who has everything… Sawyer. Sawyer doesn’t put up a fight though and is happy to let Hurley have the manifest.

In the jungle, Claire seems to be going into labour and Charlie runs off to find Jack. He bumps into Ethan and asks him to find Jack so that he can get back to Claire. When he gets back to her she seems to be ok.

Claire tells him the story of Richard Malkin and how she is only there because he told her to go to L.A. Charlie seems to think that Richard Malkin might have known about the crash, because the only thing he ever wanted was for Claire to raise the baby, and now that they’re on the island she will have to do just that. After thinking back on it, Claire begins to think that Richard Malkin did know.

At the caves Sayid returns injured and seems anxious to tell Jack something. He tells Jack that they’re not alone, and just as he says this Hurley arrives all panic stricken and tells Jack that there’s a name that isn’t on the manifest, that someone amongst them wasn’t on the plane!*

On the way back to the caves Claire and Charlie are stopped by Ethan who seems to be giving them the evil eyes. It appears that he’s the one who tried to “hurt” Claire’s baby.

*Oh yes, another OMG moment!

Things we learn:

• Claire was on her way to L.A. after a psychic told her that the baby will be safe in the care of an L.A. couple.
• Claire’s boyfriend Thomas pursuaded her to keep the baby but a few months later realised he couldn’t hack it and broke up with her.

Questions?

• Is Richard Malkin really psychic?
• When Claire goes to see the psychic her friend interupts the reading by mentioning Claires mum and the fact that they haven’t told her because she’s “scared she’ll…” - in a later episode it’s revealed that Claires mum is infact in a coma, so what was this in reference to? Could the writers have just figured out Claires storyline after they’d written this episode?
• Claire mentions that her father used to sing “Catch a Falling Star” to her when she was little, but it is later revealed that Claire’s father is infact Christian Shepherd, and that he walked out on her mum when she was little. Later, Claire is reunited with her father but it isn’t a happy reunion and Claire seems to hate him. So, why would Claire have such sentimental feelings about a person she so obviously despises? Again, could this be down to the fact that the writers hadn’t figured out Claire’s full storyline at this point?

Things worth noting:

• Claires boyfriend, Thomas, is a painter and one of his paintings turns up in Mr Charles Widmores office in a later episode.
• Ethan Rom is an annogram of “Other Man”
• Richard Malkin also has an encounter with Mr. Eko but tells Mr. Eko that he is a fraud.
