Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.

Character Episode: Kate

Quick Recap On Flashback:
Kate is at a bank having a meeting with the bank manager, when some masked men come barging in with guns who are there to rob the bank. One of the men grabs Kate and makes her get on the floor.

Whatever the Case May Be

Someone tries to be a hero and attacks one of them causing to drop his gun and it lands right near Kate. The wannabe-hero tells Kate to pick up the gun and shoot but she declares that she doesn’t know how to use a gun. Another of the masked men grabs Kate and drags her to a room out of sight. He takes off his mask and they smile at each other before sharing a kiss. It seems Kate is in on the robbery.

The guy then hits Kate to make it look like he really attacked her before taking her back out again. He pulls a gun on Kate and tells the bank manager that if he doesn’t open the vault, he will kill Kate. The bank manager agrees.

Whatever the Case May Be

In the vault Kate pulls a gun on her partner in crime and asks the bank manager for safety deposit box no. 815. She has a key for the box but isn’t permitted access to it, which is why she chose to stage a bank robbery. She opens the box and it appears she has got what she wanted.

Quick Recap On Island:

Kate is out in the jungle picking apples from the trees when she hears movement in the bushes. She throws a rock in that direction and it turns out it is Sawyer. He claims he is just looking out for her since Claire got abducted.

As they’re walking through the jungle they come accross a waterfall and a lake where they have a bit of fun and dive in. Whilst underwater, they both notice some wreckage and dead bodies from the plane. Kate particularly has her eye on a case which she asks Sawyer to get for her, claiming that it’s hers. When Sawyer realises it isn’t hers he takes it from her.

Whatever the Case May Be

On the beach the survivors are having to move their stuff up the coast as the tide is coming in too strong and taking some of their stuff with it.

Shannon asks Boone what he is up to with Locke as he has been with him for the past four days. Boone tells her he is helping Locke look for Claire instead of being “useless” like she is.

At night, Kate sneaks into Sawyers tent in an attempt to steal the case from him, but he wakes up and grabs hold of her to stop her.

Whatever the Case May Be

The next day Sayid asks Shannon to help him translate some of Rouseauu’s papers. Initially she thinks Boone has put him up to it, but when Shannon asks Sayid if he did his reply was a simple “no”. She agrees to help but insists she doesn’t know too much French.

Sawyer is having difficulty opening the case which results in him throwing it from the top of trees to see if it will open. Kate has been following him and as soon as he’s thrown it down she grabs it and runs off. Sawyer catches up with her though and tells her she can have it if she’ll tell him what’s in it. She doesn’t give in though.

Whatever the Case May Be

At the caves, Kate tells Jack about the case and tells him it has guns in it. She tells him the key is in the Marshalls wallet in his back pocket and wants to know where his body is buried so she can dig it up. Jack senses that this isn’t just about guns and asks her what else is in the case. She plays all innocent and claims that it’s just the guns.

When they’ve dug up the body Kate finds the wallet, but when she opens it she quickly throws it down because there are maggots crawling all over it. It took Jack a few seconds to realise it was just a distraction so that Kate could take the key without Jack knowing. He seems dissapointed in Kate for lieing to him.

Whatever the Case May Be

At the beach Sayid is becoming annoyed with Shannon’s translations because it doesn’t make any sense. Shannon takes offence at this because it could just be that Rouseauu wasn’t making any sense, not her, and she ends up running off.

Jack goes to see Sawyer and blackmails him into giving him the case. When he’s got it he finds Kate and tells her that they’re going to open the case together.

When the case is open Jack hands her what she wants and, when she opens it to reveal a toy airplane, he asks her what it is. She tells him it belonged to the man she loved, but Jack doesn’t believe her and keeps pressing her to tell the truth. In all her emotion, she eventually tells him it belonged to the man she killed.

Whatever the Case May Be

That night at the beach, Rose tells Charlie that she believes her husband is still alive. “There’s a fine line between faith and denial”, she says. Charlie breaks down about the fact that he couldn’t help Claire, and Rose comforts him while praying.

Whatever the Case May Be

Shannon speaks to Sayid and explains to him that her boyfriend in France had a young boy who would watch a movie over and over again. It was a famous movie dubbed in French, and she explains that the notes on Rouseauu’s papers were the same song: they were song lyrics. Shannon begins to sing the song to Sayid as Boone looks on.

Whatever the Case May Be

Things we learn:

  • One of the things Kate did in her life as a fugitive was rob a bank for a toy plane that belonged to the man she killed (Who we later found out was a man she loved aswell).
