Character Episode: Michael and Walt

Quick Recap On Flashback:
Michael and his pregnant girlfriend, Susan, are out shopping for some baby things. Michael is clearly excited about becoming a father and tells Susan he’d like to call the baby Walter after his father. She agrees, as long as he keeps her surname.

Special

When Walt is just a few months old Susan tells Michael she has been offered a job in Amsterdam and wants to take it. Michael is upset as he knows that if she takes the job she will take Walt with her. Michael tries to pursuade Susan not to take the job and to work out their problems, but she tells him she’s already accepted it.

Special

About a year later Michael is on the phone to Susan and he asks to speak to Walt. He can hear the sound of a mans voice in the background and when asked who he is, Susan tells him it’s her new boyfriend, Brian. Michael is angry and tells her he’ll be coming to Amsterdam to get Walt, and as he puts the phone down and walks accross the street he is hit by a car.

Special

A few months Later Michael is still recovering in hospital when he is visited by Susan. Susan tells him that she and Brian are getting married and that he wants to adopt Walt. Michael is upset by this but sees he has no choice but to let Walt go.

Special

Eight years later, Susan, Brian and Walt are now in Australia. Walt is talking about his school project on Australian birds but Susan and Brian seem distracted when Susan begins to feel ill. Walt seems to be annoyed that they’re not paying attention and tells them repeatedly “you’re not looking”… when an Australian bird hits the floor of the balcony and dies. It just so happens that the bird is the same one Walt has been looking at in his book.

Special

A week later Brian visits Michael in New York and tells him Susan has died and that she wanted him to look after Walt now. Michael gets angry as he knows this is a lie and Brian explains that he never really wanted to adopt Walt. He tells Michael that when Walt is around things happen, and that he’s different somehow. Michael is angry and upset that he never got to be Walts father, and is obviously distraught that Brian now wants nothing to do with Walt.

Special

Michael makes his way to Australia to see Walt. Walts nanny gives Michael a box of letters that he’d sent over the years to Walt, but Susan had never given to him. When Michael meets Walt, Walt seems a bit cold towards him. He asks where Brian is. To protect Walts feelings Micheal lies and tells him that because he is his real father he has to be his legal guardian now.

Quick Recap On Island:
Michael is out in the jungle looking for Walt. When he finds him he is with Locke and Boone, and Locke is teaching him how to throw a knife. Michael is angry that Locke is trying to influence his ten year old son and tells him to stay away from him.

Special

Later, Sayid, Jack and Shannon are discussing Roussaeu’s maps when Michael declares that he is going to build a raft to get them off the island.

The next day, Charlie is looking through Claire’s bags for her diary. When he can’t find it he goes to the one person who will most probably have it: Sawyer. They have a bit of a punch up but Charlie manages to get the diary from him.

Special

Michael gets Walt to help him with the start of the raft, but after seeing Locke and Boone heading to the caves, Walt follows them without Michael knowing.

When Michael realises Walt is gone he heads to the caves and sees him talking to Locke. Michael threatens Locke and tells him if he ever goes near him again he will kill him. Walt stands up for Locke and tells Michael he is his friend. Michael throws the Spanish comic book into a nearby fire and tells Walt he will do as he’s told.

Special

Later, when Walt is in the jungle with Vincent, Vincent seems aggitated by something and runs off. Walt chases after him. When Walt realises he’s lost Vincent he slows down but then is attacked by a Polar Bear! He hides in the trees and shouts for his dad.

When Michael realises Walt could be in danger Locke offers his help in finding him. They hear Walt calling for help and are shocked to see a Polar Bear attacking him. Both Locke and Michael climb a nearby tree and Locke ties Michael up round the waist to lower him down to where Walt is. Michael stabs the Polar Bear with a knife and Walt is alive and safe.

Special

Later that night, Michael gives the box of letters to Walt. Walt hadn’t seen them before and I think he realises now just how much Michael loves him and that he’s only doing what’s right by him.

Charlie goes to speak with Jack and Sayid and tells them he read Claire’s diary and in it was mention of the Black Rock. He suggests that that maybe where Claire is but they’re unwilling to help.

When Locke and Boone are out in the jungle looking for Vincent they hear rustling in the bushes. Locke is ready to attack just in case, but who should come out of the bushes looking the worst for wear - it’s Claire!

Special

Things we learn:

  • Michael wanted to be a part of Walts life but Walts mother didn’t want him to.
  • Walt somehow has something special about him.

Things worth noting:

  • When in Walt was looking at the Australian bird book, the bird that fell and died just happened to be the same bird he was looking at in his book. When the Polar Bear attacked him in the jungle, it just happened to be that the last page he looked at in the Spanish comic book had a picture of a Polar Bear on it. (And an angry one at that!)

Mysteries:

  • Polar Bears

  1. AngeloCoomet Says:

I never noticed that - about the bird Walt looked at in the book being the same as the bird that hit the window.

That’s rather intriguing. . . though it feels like something that would be mor intriguing if I had more hope that Walt’s character was going to become significant. His marginalisation somewhat dampens my enthusiasm regarding him.
