Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.

Character Episode: Charlie

Quick Recap On Flashback:
Charlie and his friend go to a bar and are talking about a girl that is at the bar. Her name is Lucy. Charlie’s friend reminds him that they’re running out of heroin and to be able to buy some more, he must rob something from this girl. His friend has done his research as they’re not just talking about any girl: she’s a rich girl.

Later we see Charlie sweet talking Lucy and her friends and it seems his plan is coming together.

Homecoming

A few days later Charlie and Lucy are at her house and Charlie takes a look at all the valuables she has, or rather, her father has. Lucy invites Charlie over for dinner one night with her and her father. Charlie helplessly agrees.

Homecoming

At the dinner Charlie is talking about Drive Shaft and how it seems they’re not going to do anymore stuff together since his brother Liam had his daughter. Lucy’s father takes a likeing to Charlie and offers him a job at his firm selling copiers. Charlie accepts the job but has no intention of actually going.

Homecoming

When Charlie tells his friend what’s happened his friend is annoyed as the plan was to just get in there and steal something so that they can get their hands on some more heroin. With them quickly running out, and his friend reluctant to give any to Charlie, he must spend the weekend without any - which means come Monday morning he will be feeling the effects of heroin withdrawal.

When it’s the first day of Charlie’s new job he is at Lucy’s getting ready to go. He isn’t feeling too good because of the heroin withdrawal, but tells Lucy it’s just nerves. She has bought him a nice new suit and a briefcase to match. While Lucy is out of the room Charlie picks something valuable up and puts it in his pocket then tries to leave, insisting he must catch the bus for his first day at work. Unfortunately for Charlie, Lucy insists she drive him, meaning Charlie will have to do a day of work afterall.

Homecoming

With his heroin withdrawal Charlies day at work doesn’t go according to plan and he ends up throwing up into the copier that he is trying to sell.

When he goes to see Lucy later she is understandably upset and tells Charlie they found what he’d stolen in his jacket pocket at the hospital. She feels betrayed by Charlie but can’t understand why he took the job. He tells her he took it because he wanted her to feel like he can look after her. Lucy angrily tells him he will never look after anyone and slams the door in his face.

Homecoming

Quick Recap On Island:
Locke carries Claire to the caves and explains to the camp that he and Boone found her wandering in the jungle and that she’d passed out.

Charlie is quick on the scene to see if Claire is ok. When she comes to she looks confused and starts to panic and scream “Who are you people?!”. It appears that she doesn’t remember what has happened to her.

Homecoming

Jack tries to explain to her the situation - that they’d all crashed there on Flight 815 and that she’d been abducted by Ethan over a week earlier. When Charlie goes to speak with her later on he tries to comfort her. Claire has no recollection of him or their friendship, but Charlie stands by her nonetheless.

Homecoming

The next day, Charlie is walking through the jungle and comes accross Jin. He tries to have a conversation with him but he knew it was pretty useless because he can’t understand him. They suddenly stop to a weird noise that appears to be surrounding them, and all of a sudden Jin is knocked to the ground.

Charlie is greeted by an angry Ethan who tells Charlie that he wants Claire back, and if he doesn’t get her back he will kill one of the survivors every day until he does - and he will leave Charlie til last.

Homecoming

Charlie is quick to tell Jack and Locke what happened and they agree that they will guard the area. They also decide not to tell Claire.

At the caves Kate reminds Jack of the Marshall’s case with the guns in it and suggests that they use them. Jack disagrees, however, and thinks the situation can be handled without guns.

That night, Boone is keeping guard of an area but he can’t keep his eyes open. The next day he wakes up and hears a noise coming from the jungle. He follows it only to find it is Vincent. Locke and Sayid come running through to see what the commotion is about. When they’re there, they hear a scream from the beach.

They run to the beach to find one of the survivors dead, in the water. Ethan had managed to kill him by coming through the water.

Homecoming

At the caves Claire gets the feeling that everyone is staring at her. She asks Shannon why they are and Shannon tells her about Ethan and his warning, and that he’s already killed one person.

When Charlie arrives back at the caves Claire shouts at him for not telling her about the Ethan situation. Charlie apologises and explains he lied to protect her.

Homecoming

In the jungle, Jack is walking with Locke to show him the case with the guns in. It seems that Jack now thinks it’s the right time to use the guns to resolve the situation.

At the caves Claire says she wants to help and Jack and Locke come up with a plan to infiltrate Ethan. They will take Claire where Ethan wants her to go and hide in the trees and ambush him when he gets there.

Charlie wants to go and be one of the gun men, but Jack thinks it best he doesn’t because he’s too emotionally involved.

Jack, Locke, Sayid, Sawyer and Kate go off into the jungle with Claire and hide. It is raining and dark and difficult to see just where Ethan will appear.

When he does appear Claire runs off and everyone tries to get to Ethan. Kate drops her gun in the process.

Homecoming

Jack gets to Ethan and a fight ensues. Jack isn’t going to let Ethan win this time, and when Ethan appears to be out of strength he stops hitting him: afterall, they need him alive to question him.

But, it appears Charlie followed them and he picks up the gun Kate dropped and out of nowhere shoots Ethan numberous times killing him. A look of shock appears on everyones faces, but Charlie doesn’t seem to care.

Homecoming

Later, when speaking with Jack, Charlie tells him that if he was in that situation again he wouldn’t hesitate to shoot: Ethan abducted Claire and left Charlie to die - “he deserved to die“, said Charlie.

Things we learn:

  • Charlie, being a heroin addict, also had a life of a con-artist (or wannabe con-artist).
  • Claire has no recollection of her time with Ethan.

Things worth noting:

  • In a future episode we find out that pregnant women usually die on the island, and that Ethan abducted Claire to inject her and her baby with something to keep them alive. Or at least, that’s what we think.
  • In another future episode we also find out that separately, Alex (Rousseau’s daughter) and Rousseau helped Claire escape.
