Character Episode: Jin and Sun

Quick Recap On Flashback:
Jin is in the office of Sun’s father and he is being quizzed about why he wishes to marry Sun. Jin tells Sun’s father that he is ambitious but when he accepts a job from him, Sun’s father asks him why he should let his daughter marry someone who sells his dreams so easily. And to that, the answer was simple, “She is my dream”, he says. Sun’s father welcomes Jin to the company.

A while later it’s the wedding reception and Jin and Sun have a quiet moment alone. Sun is wanting to go on her honeymoon straight away but Jin insists that he must make a good impression with her father and finish off his training at work before thinking about their honeymoon.

In Translation

At work, Jin is told to give someone a “message” and he goes to see a man who looks worried when Jin tells him he’s from Paik Industries. Luckily for the man, Jin doesn’t quite understand the meaning of giving someone a message and simply tells this man that Mr Paik is displeased with him. This seems to make the man happy and as a thank you he gives Jin the family’s pet dog.

In Translation

At home, Sun has worked hard on a family meal for her and Jin and wants to spend some quality time with her husband. Unfortunately they are interupted by a phone call from Mr Paik who wants to see Jin. When Jin goes to the office Mr Paik isn’t very happy with him and tells him to go with someone who will show him how to deliver a message properly.

In Translation

When Jin is driving the man to the house, he is given instructions on what to do: when the man is delivering the message Jin must leave the car running, and when he returns he should drive at the usual speed limit. Jin looks in the rear-view mirror and notices the guy preparing a gun. When they arrive at the house Jin decides to deliver the message himself and barges in the house and hits the man numberous times. When he’s done he tells the man “I just saved your life”.

In Translation

Jin arrives home with blood on his hands and seems reluctant to talk to Sun when she questions him about it. Sun pushes him to tell her what happened, and Jin tells her he was doing a job for her father. He tells her “I do whatever your father tells me to”. Sun is obviously not happy with this situation and leaves the room. Jin then looks in the mirror and begins to cry.

In Translation

Jin goes to see his father, whom he told Sun was dead. He tells him he’s sorry and that he was ashamed of him. His father didn’t hold this against him and was very happy to see his son. They do some fishing and Jin tells him of his wife and how they hardly talk anymore. Jin says that Mr Paik wants him to go to Australia then L.A. to give some watches to his associates, and his father pursuades him that when they get to America they should stay there and start a new life.

Quick Recap On Island:
Jin is looking out to sea when he sees Sun wearing a bikini. He runs over to her frantically and tells her to cover herself up. They end up having an argument infront of everyone and when Jin looks like he’s about to get violent, Michael intervenes. Sun slaps Michael accross the face and looks angry with him. Sun and Jin then walk away still bickering at each other.

In Translation

At the caves Jin asks Sun what’s going on between her and Michael. Sun tells him he’s being ridiculous.

Later, Sun goes to the beach to apologise to Michael and explains that she only slapped him to protect him from Jin. Michael doesn’t seem bothered by the apology and tells Sun it’s her problem, not his.

In Translation

Shannon is with Sayid tieing knots and Sayid seems impressed with her knot-tieing ability. She tells Sayid that they should spend a Saturday night together tieing knots after he made a joke about her becoming a spinster. He looks at her like he’s smitten.

Michael is with Walt near the raft and they’re talking about New York. Michael is excited about the possibility of them going home and being able to show Walt the buildings in New York, but Walt doesn’t seem that interested.

That night, someone burns the raft and all accusations go to Jin who is nowhere to be found. When Sun finds him in the caves he is putting his hands under the water to cool them off because he’s burnt them. Sun thinks Jin did it and shouts at him and tells him Michael was trying to get them off the island, but Jin didn’t seem too impressed when Sun said Michael’s name.

In Translation

Sayid goes to speak with Boone and tells him there’s a possibility he and Shannon may become more than just friends. Boone warns him off her telling him she usually dates older guys who can protect her and look after her, but when she’s done with them she quickly forgets about them.

Jin wakes up out in the jungle and goes to a stream to refresh himself, but Sawyer comes out behind him and knocks him out.

In Translation

At the beach Sayid tells Shannon that he thinks she should look for other friends, but she realises that Boone has been speaking to him and goes off to find him.

When she finds Locke she tells him to pass a message on to Boone, but Locke tells her that her relationship with Sayid has nothing to do with her brother, and that “everyone gets a new life on this island”.

In Translation

Sawyer drags Jin all the way to the beach where Michael is quick to confront him. Jack tries to stop Michael from attacking Jin but is told by Sayid that it is their fight and should be resolved. Jin says something to Michael in Korean which seems to tick Michael off and he hits him.

In Translation

Sun is watching what’s going on, and when Michael goes for the third punch she shouts for him to stop it. Everyone looks confused, including Jin, at Sun’s apparant English language skills and wonder why she never said anything.

In Translation

She doesn’t address that, however, and simply tells everyone that Jin didn’t start the fire, and that he burned his hands trying to put it out.

Locke then comes along and tells everyone that they shouldn’t be accusing each other, that they should be accusing “them” - The Others. He tells everyone “we’re not the only people on this island and we all know it!”.

In Translation

Later, Walt is with Michael at the raft, and not put off by someone burning it, he declares that he is going to build another one. Walt looks surprised but impressed by his fathers determination and offers to help build the next one.

At the caves Sun is trying to talk to Jin but he ignores her. She then tells him, in English, that she was going to leave him but he changed her mind. She asks him if they can go back to the beginning, but he tells her it’s too late.

That night, Shannon goes over to Sayid and kisses him. When Sayid asks what she did that for, she repeats what Locke told her, that everyone gets a new life on this island, and she wants to start hers now.

In Translation

Locke sees Walt playing backgammon and decides to join him. He asks Walt why he burned the raft. Walt looks at Locke as though he’s wondering how Locke knows, but he tells him he doesn’t want to move anymore, and that he likes it on the island.

The next day, Jin goes to the raft with some wood in hand and decides to help Michael build the next raft. Michael looks surprised, but agrees to let Jin help.

Things we learn:

  • In “House of the Rising Sun” we saw the scene where Jin came in with blood all over him but never knew why. This episode explains how he got blood on him.
  • The dog Jin gave to Sun in “House of the Rising Sun” was actually given to him as a thank you from a man who Jin delivered a message to.

Connections:

  • The first time Jin goes to the mans house to deliver a message, his little girl is watching the television and on it is news coverage of Hurley (and persumably his lottery win).
