Deus Ex Machina - Lost Season 1 Episode 19 Review
Written by admin on December 3, 2008Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.
Character Episode: Locke
Quick Recap On Flashback:
Locke is working at a superstore when a woman, who is acting very strangely, asks Locke where she can find something in the store. He very kindly tells her but then she just seems to stare at him.

Later, in the car park of the superstore, the woman is there again. She is watching Locke. When Locke sees her he runs after her and asks her why she’s following him. She tells him that she is his mother.
They go for a coffee and his mother, Emily, tells him about why she gave him up for adoption. When Locke asks about his father she tells Locke that he was immaculately conceived.

Locke has someone check out details of his mother and finds out that she has some form of schizophrenia and that she’s fine as long as she takes her meds. Locke then asks for information about his father and is given information on Anthony Cooper.

Locke drives to Anthonys house to meet with him. Anthony seems surprised to find out he has a son, but not surprised that Emily told him he was immaculately conceived. Anthony seems taken with Locke and they soon start spending lots of time together.

One day, Locke arrives at Anthonys an hour early and sees him hooked up to a dialysis machine. Anthony tells Locke that he has problems with one of his kidneys and that he needs a kidney transplant. Locke looks worried about his father, but Anthony tells him not to worry about it.

When they’re out hunting birds they seem to bond really well and Locke decides to give Anthony one of his kidneys.

When they’re at the hospital waiting to go for their operations Anthony tells Locke that he will see him after the operation. When Locke wakes up, however, his father is gone. Emily is there and she tells him that the whole thing was a con to get one of Lockes kidneys, and that it was all Anthonys idea.
Locke is angry and upset and gets himself out of the hospital bed and drives to Anthonys house. When he is refused entry Locke drives off angrily and is frustrated that someone who was supposed to love him has betrayed him so badly.

Quick Recap On Island:
Locke and Boone are at the hatch and have made a trebuchet to try and open it. When they use it, it falls apart and a broken shard is lodged in Lockes leg. Locke is unaware of this until Boone points it out.

Later, Locke tries putting sharp pieces of wood into his legs but seems unable to feel it. He then procedes to put burning wood on his feet and still no sensation in his legs.
Locke has a dream about being at the hatch with Boone and they’re talking about how they’re going to open it. Locke sees a yellow beach craft fly in the distance and when he asks Boone if he saw it, Boone seems to be looking at something else entirely. We then see a bloodied Boone repeating “Theresa falls down the stairs, Theresa falls up the stairs”. Lockes mother is also in the dream and Locke appears wheel chair bound.

Locke wakes up with a startle but immediately grabs Boone and heads for the hatch.
When they’re at the hatch Locke tells Boone about his dream and that he knows what to do now. Boone seems pessimistic about the idea of Lockes dreams telling him what to do, until Locke mentions Theresa. Boone wonders how Locke could know about her. They both head off into the jungle in the direction Locke saw the beach craft going.
At the beach Jack speaks with Sawyer about the headaches he’s been having recently. Sawyer seems worried that it could be a brain tumour because one of his relatives died of it, but doesn’t seem to want Jacks help.

On their way to the jungle Locke and Boone come accross a corpse of someone who is dressed as a preist. When discovering a gun on its body, they start to wonder if the guy really is a preist.

Kate sees Sawyer on the beach in pain with his headache and pursuades him to go and see Jack. After a check up and some very embarrassing questions it is discovered that Sawyer needs glasses.
In the jungle, Locke begins to lose the feelings in his legs and seems unable to walk. He collapses on the ground. When he looks up he sees a yellow beach craft stuck in a tree - the same yellow beach craft he saw in his dream.

As Locke can no longer walk he asks Boone to go up there and find out whats in the plane.
When Boone gets into the plane all he finds are statues of the virgin mary stuffed with bags of heroin. He seems angry at Locke for making him go up there but he finds a radio and tries to use it. He hears a voice on the other end when he relays a message, but his weight causes the plane to fall and he gets badly injured.

Locke manages to find power in his legs and gets Boone out of the plane and carries him all the way to the caves to be seen to by Jack. Locke lies to Jack and tells him Boone fell off a cliff, and when Jack asks him to explain fully what happened Locke had disappeared.

Locke goes to the hatch and is upset and angry. He shouts out “I did everything you asked so why did you do this?” and he bangs on the hatch. Suddenly, a light comes up out of the hatch and Locke stares at it in amazement.

Things we learn:
- Locke was conned out of a kidney by his natural father, Anthony Cooper.
Things worth noting:
- When Boone makes contact with someone using the radio, the voice that comes through is that of Bernard who is using a radio on the other side of the island. He says to Boone “We’re the survivors of flight 815″ but Boone doesn’t hear this because the plane is falling at that precise moment.

Surely it was worth noting that the light from the inside of ‘the hatch’ was Desmond and his fake daylight effect as he investigated who was making the noise!
And I would also have mentioned that the light slaps Locke gives ‘the hatch’ are nowhere near as loud and pounding as the sounds Desmond hears during the Live Together, Die Alone episode.

Wow I can’t believe I forgot to mention that! I guess sometimes I’m in a rush to write these that I forget things. *Ooops*
Thanks for pointing it out! :)
