The Greater Good - Lost Season 1 Episode 21 Review
Written by admin on December 17, 2008Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.
Character Episode: Sayid
Quick Recap On Flashback:
Sayid is being questioned by the CIA who want his help in finding the location of 300lbs of C-4 explosives that were stolen from an Army base outside of Melbourne by a terrorist cell. An old friend of Sayids, Essam, is a member of the cell, and they want Sayid to earn his trust to find out where the location is. Sayid is reluctant to help, but the CIA tell him they know where Nadia is and if he cooperates they will give him her location.

Sayid goes to Australia and visits a Mosque where Essam is praying. Sayid blends in but after a short while Essam sees him and recognises him. When they’re outside Essam greets him and Sayid plays along and acts surprised to see him. Sayid asks how his wife is but is saddened to hear that she died due to a stray bomb.

Essam invites Sayid over to his place and meets Essams room mates, Yusef and Haddad. Whilst they’re in conversation, Sayid notices an electronic surveillance device in the smoke detector and takes it out. Essam explains to his room mates that Sayid was once in the Republican Guard and knows things. Haddad suggests that maybe it wasn’t coincidence that Essam met up with Sayid, it was fate.

A couple of days later, Sayid and Essam are playing football outside, discussing the cells plans for the C-4 explosives. Essam tells Sayid that he’s been chosen as the martyr but he is having doubts about doing it.

Later, Sayid meets up with the CIA agents and asks them to get Essam out of there. They tell Sayid they can’t do that and when Sayid refuses to continue helping them they tell him they will arrest Nadia. Sayid has no choice, and has to pursuade Essam to go through with it.

Sayid and Essam are walking through town and Essam is still having doubts about being the martyr. Sayid tells Essam to do it for the greater good, and to do it for his wife. Essam seems convinced now but asks Sayid to do it with him. Sayid agrees.

Haddad and Essam arrive with a van and tell Sayid that it is time. Sayid gets in the van and is driven to a warehouse. He and Essam get into a larger van filled with the c-4 explosives. When Haddad leaves in the other van, Sayid confesses to Essam that he is working with the CIA and that he has a chance to leave before calling them. Essam is angry and upset with Sayid for lieing and pulls a gun on him. Sayid explains that he did it to find Nadia. Essam looks at Sayid and says “I hope she makes you whole again”, before shooting himself.

The CIA agents arrive and tell Sayid that Nadia is in California. They give him a plane ticket to LA that leaves in two hours. Sayid then asks to claim Essams body because no one else will, and the CIA agent agrees to change his flight to tommorrow so Sayid can do so.

Quick Recap On Island:
Shannon is at the caves looking over Boones body. Sayid asks her if there’s anything he can do for her, but she doesn’t respond.

Kate is in the jungle following Jack. Jack looks dreadful after being up all night and giving blood to Boone to try and save his life. He is angry with Locke because he based his medical treatment on Lockes lie, and thinks that if he’d known the true story he might have been able to save Boone. Kate is sympathetic, but pursuades Jack to go back to the beach.
At the beach they are having a funeral for Boone. Jack asks Shannon if she’d like to say anything, but she seems too sad to do so. Instead, Sayid says a few nice words about Boone.

Locke arrives, his t-shirt covered in Boones blood, and explains what really happened. He takes full responsibility and says that Boone was a hero. Jack is angry at the sight of Locke and attacks him, calling him a murderer. Everyone pulls Jack off Locke and as he’s walking back he collapses due to exhaustion. Jack tells Sayid, Kate and Sun that Locke is lieing. He tells them what Boone said about the Hatch and that Locke told him not to tell.

Later, Shannon is sat on the beach and is joined by Locke. Locke apologises for what happened and asks for forgiveness.
Later, at the caves, Shannon talks to Sayid and reminds him that he asked if he could do anything for her. She says, “John Locke killed my brother, can you do something about that?”. Sayid looks concerned but doesn’t say anything.

At the beach, Jack is getting some rest at his tent but decides he’s had enough and wants to get up and do something. Kate advises him not to because she crushed up some sleeping pills and put it in his juice. Jack begins to feel drowsy and is soon off to sleep.
At the caves, Sayid asks Locke to take him to the beechcraft. He says he may be able to get some working parts from the radio that Boone had used. On their way through the jungle Sayid asks Locke a number of questions and Locke picks up on the fact that Sayid may not trust him.

When they arrive at the beechcraft Locke asks Sayid why he doesn’t trust him. Sayid mentions that it could be the fact that Locke has been walking round with a gun that no one knows about. Locke explains he found it on the body of the dead preist and hands it over to Sayid. Locke then confesses to Sayid that it was him who knocked him out when he was trying to triangulate a signal all those weeks ago. Sayid isn’t impressed and pulls the gun on Locke. Sayid asks about the Hatch. Locke plays dumb and mentions that the beechcraft has a hatch on the end.

When Sayid arrives back at the beach he tells Shannon he has spoken with Locke and believes that what happened to Boone was an accident. Shannon doesn’t seem satisfied with this.
Jack wakes up from his sleep to find Kate next to him with some food. After a while he notices the key to the case with the guns in is missing from his neck. Kate explains that no one has been in there but Jack thinks it’s Locke who has taken the key. When Sayid sees what’s going on he realises that it wasn’t Locke, it was Shannon.

Sayid, Jack and Kate run through the jungle in the rain trying to find Shannon. They stumble upon Locke who has his hands up and see that Shannon has a gun and is pointing it at Locke. Sayid tries to pursuade her that what happened was an accident, but she doesn’t believe him. Just as she shoots the gun Sayid tackles her. She runs off upset.
That night, Sayid walks over to Locke and tells him to take him to the Hatch. Locke plays dumb again but Sayid won’t hear anymore lies.

Things we learn:
- If Sayid hadn’t claimed Essams body he would never have been on Flight 815.
Things worth noting:
- We find out in this episode that Locke was the one who knocked Sayid out in “The Moth”.

We are given our first, arguable, mention and potential relationship with Widmore in this episode.
When Sayid asks the FBI people about where Nadia is, he receives this reply:
AGENT COLE: “She lives in Irvine, California, just south of Los Angeles — works as a lab-tech at a medical testing company — plane ticket, walking around money, you’re on an Oceanic flight to LA. It leaves in two hours.”
OK, so it’s kind of tenuous. . . A lab technician at a medical testing company. But it works for it to be Widmore. Or maybe Dharma. Potentially whatever work she was doing at this place could have been part of the reason why she ended up murdered. . .?
