Born to Run - Lost Season 1 Episode 22 Review
Written by admin on January 5, 2009Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.
Character Episode: Kate
Quick Recap On Flashback:
A blonde Kate drives up to a motel and changes the license plate on her car. She sneaks into a recently vacant room and freshens up and washes the blonde out of her hair. She then goes to reception and asks for a letter that she seemed to be expecting, although it was addressed to a false name, “Joan Hart”. She is seen reading the letter in her car and crying at the words it contains.

She is later seen attempting to take some flowers to somebody at the hospital, only she sees a policeman and decides to scarper. She hides in the back of a car and surprises her childhood sweetheart, Tom (who is a doctor at the hospital), when he gets in. She asks for his help and explains that her mum, Diane, is dieing of cancer.

They go to Tom’s house and he arranges for Diane to have an MRI scan in the next few hours so that Kate can see her in private. They talk about old times and Kate wonders if “it’s still there”. Tom knows what shes talking about and seems reluctant to go, but Kate gets her way and they drive to a field near a tree. Kate counts some steps from the tree to a spot where they both start to dig.

A beer and a few digs later Kate finds what they’re looking for. It’s a box that they hid when they were younger as a “time capsule”. It contains Tom’s toy plane and a tape recording of them. They listen to the tape and a younger Kate says how when she’s older she wants to run away from everything. Tom looks at Kate and they share a kiss.

They arrive at the hospital in time for Dianes MRI scan and Kate gets a moment alone with her. At first Diane doesn’t know who it is, and Kate apologises for everything that she’s done. When Diane realises that it’s her daughter she screams for help as if she’s scared of her. Kate runs away, knocking out a policeman on the way, and gets into Toms car.

Tom had followed her and gets in with her. By now there are police cars everywhere and Kate needs to drive through a barrier to be free, so she tells Tom to get out of the car. Tom refuses to leave so Kate has to drive through the barrier with him. They get shot at along the way, but when Kate stops the car she realises that Tom had been shot and killed. She’s deeply upset but has no choice but to get out of the car and run, leaving Tom and his toy plane behind.

Quick Recap On Island:
Kate is on the beach playing with Toms toy plane when she is joined by Charlie who talks about what he’s going to do when they’re rescued. Kate doesn’t share Charlies enthusiasm as she is a wanted criminal.

An argument breaks out at the raft where Dr. Arzt is explaining to everyone that they’re on the cusp of monsoon season and the sooner the raft is on its way the better.
Later, Kate asks Michael about getting a place on the raft. He tells her the raft is full and when she learns that Sawyer has a place she tries to pursuade Michael that she is a better candidate. Michael isn’t easily pursuaded though.

In the jungle, Sayid takes Jack to Locke where he is waiting for them by the hatch.
At the raft, Sawyer complains about the organisation of it which seems to irritate Michael. Michael mentions that Kate has been after his spot and that maybe she should have it.
Sawyer is angry and has a word with Kate and tells her he knows that she was the Marshalls prisoner on the plane and that she will be arrested once rescue comes, but tells her she isn’t having his spot on the raft. Kate seems riled by this and tells him “I want your spot, I’ll get your spot”.

Later, Walt is talking to Michael at the raft when Michael begins to feel ill. Walt goes for help and finds Sun and Kate. Sun goes back to the beach with Walt while Kate goes to find Jack.
At the hatch, Jack thinks they should open it but Sayid seems surprised and explains that he was hoping he’d talk some sense into Locke.

Kate finds Jack and they head for the beach to tend to Michael. Michael explains that he’s been eating the same food as Jin to rule out food poisoning. After checking the water bottles, Jack thinks someone may have put something in his water.
When Jack tells Michael this he immediately suspects Sawyer.

Later, Kate speaks to Jack at the caves about Michael and seems interested to know if his spot is now available on the raft. Jack asks her if she was the one who poisoned him but Kate seems clearly insulted by this accusation and walks off.
Walt goes to see Locke and explains that it wasn’t him who poisoned his father (because Locke knows Walt burnt the first raft). Locke reassures Walt that he knows and touches his arm. Walt seems to experience some sort of vision or feeling because he warns Locke “not to open that thing” (persumably the hatch). Locke seems shocked but Walt runs off before he could say anymore.*

At the beach a huge argument breaks out. Michael accuses Sawyer of poisoning him and announces he’s off the raft. Sawyer is angry and tells everyone that Kate is the fugitive that was on the plane and that she only cares about herself. He takes her bag from her to reveal a passport of one of the dead passengers which she was going to use to make a new identity for herself once they’d been rescued.
Kate admits she was the Marshalls prisoner but denies poisoning Michael. Everyone looks at Kate with disgust and Michael lets Sawyer back on the raft.

Later, Jack speaks with Sun and tells her he knows she was the one who poisoned Michael. Only she meant to poison Jin instead so that he wouldn’t go. Sun asks if he will tell anyone but he promises he won’t.
Sun speaks with Kate and tells her that Jack knows that it was her, but he doesn’t know that it was Kates idea. It seems it was Kates idea all along. Sun reassures her that she was only trying to help her, but Kates expression seems to tell a different story.

*Another bizarre moment in the world of Lost!
Things we learn:
- The toy plane Kate risked her life for belonged to her childhood sweetheart Tom. It turns out that when Kate tells Jack it belonged to the man she loved, then the man she killed, she was telling the truth on both accounts.
Questions:
- Did Walt see something or feel something when he warned Locke “not to open that thing”? Was he refering to The Hatch, or something else we haven’t encountered yet?
- Who sent Kate the letter about her mother? Was it Cassidy?
