The Lie

When I saw the previews for Season 5 and saw the “mystery hooded person” I always had an incline that’d it be Ms. Hawking, but I still felt an element of surprise when it was revealed to be her.

She is seen in a room writing calculations on a black board, and inputting data onto a computer, with a weird pendulum swinging to and fro in the middle of the room. The computer reads “EVENT WINDOW DETERMINED” and then she goes to speak with none other than our beloved Ben.

It’s obvious that whatever she was doing down there was to determine a date as to when the Oceanic Six can safely return to the island. Apparantly that date is 70 hours from now.

MS. HAWKING: 70 hours is what you’ve got.

BEN: Look, I lost Reyes tonight. What happens if I can’t get them all to come back?

MS. HAWKING: Then God help us all.

First of all, let’s take a trip down memory lane…

The Lie

We first meet Ms. Hawking when Desmond visits a jewelry shop to buy an engagement ring for Penny. Ms. Hawking is behind the counter and greets him with a happy smile and warmth. After Desmond has looked at a few rings he decides to buy one, which seems to surprise Ms. Hawking.

DESMOND: It’s perfect. I’ll take it.

MS. HAWKING: No you won’t. Give me the ring. Give it here.

DESMOND: I don’t understand.

MS. HAWKING: This is wrong. You don’t buy the ring. You have second thoughts; you walk right out that door. So, come on, let’s have it.

DESMOND: I don’t know what you’re on about.

MS. HAWKING: You don’t buy the ring, Desmond.

DESMOND: How do you know my name?

MS. HAWKING: Well, I know your name as well as I know that you that don’t ask Penny to marry you. In fact, you break her heart. Well, breaking her heart is, of course, what drives you in a few short years from now to enter that sailing race — to prove her father wrong — which brings you to the island where you spend the next 3 years of your life entering numbers into the computer until you are forced to turn that failsafe key. And if you don’t do those things, Desmond David Hume, every single one of us is dead. So give me that sodding ring.

So, how does she know that Desmond must spend 3 years of his life pushing that damn button? How does she know that it will end with the death of civiliazation? If Desmond could’ve changed his fate, wouldn’t someone else have pushed that button?

The Lie

She speaks with Desmond about course correction and how if she were to save a man from dieing today, he would only go and die tommorrow.

So, even if Desmond had changed his mind and proposed to Penny - the universe would’ve course corrected and he still would have ended up on the island… right? If this is the case, why did Ms. Hawking need to tell Desmond what he is destined to do?

Catch 22

DESMOND: OK, yes, I was scared about the wedding, so I had a few pints too many, maybe I, I raised my eyes, and I asked am I doing the right thing, and that’s the last thing I remember. And when I woke up, I was lying on my back in the street, and I dunno how I got there and, there was this man standing over me, Ruth. And he reached out his hand and he said to me, can I help you brother. And the first thing I noticed was the rope tied round his waist, and I looked at him and I knew, I knew, I was supposed to go with him. I was supposed to go with him, I was supposed to leave everything that mattered behind, sacrifice all of it, for a greater calling.

The Lie

In this Season 3 episode we learn that Desmond joined a monastery. It seems Desmond had some sort of loss-of-memory, presumably he had had one too many, but I think it goes deeper than that. Staying with the subject though, at the monastery there is a photograph of Brother Campbell and Ms. Hawking on Brother Campbell’s desk.

Did Ms. Hawking speak with Brother Campbell about Desmonds destiny? Is Brother Campbell a much bigger player in this scenario than we thought?

The Lie

When Desmond leaves the monsatery he meets Penny as she is loading up a van with wine. He helps her load the van, and from there we can assume they were on the way to starting their relationship. So did Brother Campbell and Ms. Hawking know that Desmond was supposed to meet Penny?

Again, if the universe course corrects, then Desmond would have met Penny no matter what. So why is Brother Campbell and Ms. Hawking seemingly guiding him along the way?

Let’s take a look at now

The Lie

Ms. Hawking is helping Ben in his mission to get back to the island. Is Ben somehow connected to “course correcting” Desmonds destiny? Had he known all along that Desmond was supposed to go to the island and push that button for 3 years? Is that why he never bothered Desmond during that time? Do Ben and Ms. Hawking go way back? Perhaps Charles Widmore was in cahoots with them at one time, perhaps he also has something to do with Desmonds destiny?

Is Ms. Hawking Daniels mother?

FARADAY: Listen, I need you to listen, or people are gonna die. My name is Daniel Faraday, and right now me and everyone else you left behind–we’re in serious danger. You’re the only person who can help us. I need you to go back to Oxford University. Go back to where we met.

(The humming is not loud rumbling, and the bright light is enveloping everything.)

FARADAY: I need you to go there and find my mother. Her name is–

The Lie

This was the conversation in Because You Left that Daniel had with Past Desmond before he time jumped. It seems too much of a coincidence that Daniel should say this in this episode, and then in the next we are re-introduced to Ms. Hawking. The same woman who had a meeting with Desmond all those years earlier.

There are a couple things that concern me about this though.

1. Daniel tells Desmond to go to Oxford to look for his mother, whereas Ms. Hawking is in LA with Ben (or so it would seem). Daniel seems to know for sure that she will be in Oxford, so will Ms. Hawking fly from LA to Oxford for this meeting with Desmond… surely she must be aware of it given her psychic abilities and all.

2. Ms. Hawking is already helping Ben get back to the island to save it from whatever danger it’s under. Why would Desmond need to go to Ms. Hawking to tell her when she already knows? Unless of course, the scene with Desmond happened before Ms. Hawking started to help Ben get back to the island. Perhaps it is this meeting that makes her help Ben?

Daniel obviously thinks his mother can help and because of this she must also have some sort of experience with time/dharma/the island, and I’m pretty sure Daniels lack of telling us his mothers name was to build up supsense for the reveal of who she is, she must be someone we know… so with that, I think that is possible that she could be Daniels mother.

Don’t mistake coincidence for fate.

Anyway, back to the episode…

Is Locke really dead?

The Lie

BEN: John’s casket is outside in a carpet van. I need to move it somewhere safe.

JACK: Safe? He’s dead, isn’t he?

Something about this conversation makes me believe that Locke isn’t really dead, and that perhaps once he gets back to the island he will come back to life.

The Lie

We see Ben visit a woman named Jill at a butchers and asks her to look after Lockes body. She seems to know alot about what is going on - but who is she? Is she also working with Ms. Hawking? Was she on the island at some point? Ben obviously trusts her to look after Locke so she must be someone he’s known for a long time.

Charlotte

CHARLOTTE: I just can’t seem to shake this bloody headache. (Sighs)

FARADAY: Well… I’m sure it’ll pass.

CHARLOTTE: No, it’s not just that. It’s the weirdest thing. Earlier, I was… I was thinking about my mum, and all of sudden, I–I couldn’t remember her maiden name. I mean, isn’t that odd?

FARADAY: Don’t worry about it. Listen, all of us have been under a lot of stress. Okay?

CHARLOTTE: Daniel… do you know what’s happening to me?

The Lie

Just when Daniel seemed to start explaining what is happening to Charlotte they are interupted by Miles bringing food to the camp. Just as with most things in Lost, we probably won’t find out what exactly is wrong with her until later on this season. But, she seems to be the only one suffering these side effects. Could it be because she was born on the island and the island is trying to stop her from stumbling upon her young self? Yet, if that were true, the side effects should happen to everyone cause there’s a chance they could all stumble upon their “younger” selves. So what is it about Charlotte that makes her different? And when will Faraday let us in on the secret?

The DI?

The Lie

We see our Losties getting attacked with flaming arrows and have to run to escape them. Juliette and Sawyer are hiding but get found by some very angry men who seem very hostile towards them and don’t give them chance to explain themselves. These men are wearing uniforms, much like the uniforms of the Dharma Initiative, only they’re different colour, and look a bit more… sophisticated?

The Dharma Initiative we know want to protect the island but don’t seem the type to just kill without giving their victims chance to speak for themselves. So, where these men really from the Dharma Initiative?

The Lie

One of the guys, who was wearing a name tag that said “Jones” spoke with an English accent, which could mean that they are a part of Widmores men. In fact, suppose this “Jones” is infact Widmore? Look at Dr. Chang, he went by at least 3 different names, so why not Widmore?

We don’t know for sure what time they were in when this happened, but if Jones is Widmore, I’d say it was about 1964. I’m just speculating though, and have no concrete evidence to support this. These time jumps are certainly going to keep us guessing, aren’t they?

The Oceanic Six

The Lie

Hurley is on a mission to get Sayid somewhere safe. He is unconcious and Hurley is trying to revive him whilst driving. Not a good idea if you’re avoiding the law, which he fails to do… at least that’s what we first think. A police car signals for Hurley to pull over, and who should that police officer be? None other than Ana Lucia. This was a shocking moment for me until I remembered that Hurley has been seeing dead people since leaving the island. She guides him on what he must do and tells him Libby says hi!

Why is Hurley seeing dead people? We saw him have a conversation with Charlie back in Season 4, and in the Season 4 finale he was playing chess with Mr. Eko (although we didn’t see him). Is it really just the island trying to communicate with Hurley? Or does it go deeper than that? And why is Hurley the only one (apart from Jack) to see dead people? Or have the rest of the O6 experienced sightings of their old friends (apart from Kates “Claire dream”)?

Hurley takes Sayid to his house for safety but it isn’t long before the FBI are knocking on the door. Hurley arranges for his dad to take Sayid and meet up with Jack who will have the resources to ressucitate him, meanwhile Hurley stays at home with his mother.

Hurley breaks down and tells his mother everything.

The Lie

HURLEY: Okay. See, we did crash, but it was on this crazy island. And we waited for rescue, and there wasn’t any rescue. And there was a smoke monster, and then there were other people on the island. We called them the Others, and they started attacking us. And we found some hatches, and there was a button you had to push every 108 minutes or… well, I was never really clear on that. But… the Others didn’t have anything to do with the hatches. That was the DHARMA Initiative. The Others killed them, and now they’re trying to kill us. And then we teamed up with the Others because some worse people were coming on a freighter. Desmond’s girlfriend’s father sent them to kill us. So we stole their helicopter and we flew it to their freighter, but it blew up. And we couldn’t go back to the island because it disappeared, so then we crashed into the ocean, and we floated there for a while until a boat came and picked us up. And by then, there were six of us. That part was true. (Whispers) But the re…

(Hurley’s voice breaks. He takes a second to regain composure.)

HURLEY: But the rest of the people… who were on the plane? They’re still on that island.

I couldn’t help but laugh as Hurley was explaining what had happened to him, because when he put it like that, it really does sound unbelievable. His mother, however, says that she does believe him, and Hurley seems relieved to have got it off his chest.

The Lie

Later, after Hurleys father has dropped Sayid off with Jack, Jack calls Ben to give him an update on what’s happening. When Sayid comes round he asks Jack if anyone else knows where Hurley is.

The Lie

The next scene cuts to Ben sneaking up on Hurley in his house and tells him that going back to the island will free him of all the lies. Hurley remembers what Sayid told him about not trusting Ben, and rather than go anywhere with Ben, he runs outside where the FBI have been watching the house and chooses to get arrested. He gives a sort of evil smile to Ben as Ben watches him get arrested.

How will they get Hurley out of FBI custody? Is Sayid going to have to go kick some FBI ass in order to free him? Or will Hurley be left in the real world while the rest of the O6 make it back to the island?

The Lie

Kate receives a phone call from Sun who is in LA and they meet up for a chat. Kate tells Sun about the lawyers who visited her asking for blood tests, and Sun suggests that if it is anyone who wants to expose their lie they would just do it, and hints at somebody wanting Aaron.

Suns meeting with Charles Widmore didn’t give us much to go on, but could Sun be behind the blood test requests? Perhaps she sees Aaron as a pawn for Ben?

Conclusion

It’s great how the story is developing and revealing a little bit more as it goes on, and this episode was no exception. I am intrigued as to what is happening to Charlotte and who Mr Jones is, but more so by Ms. Hawking. Just who is she?! I guess we’ll have to wait to find out!

Good review. Very thorough. I thought it was great when Hurley’s mother said she believed him. He has had to feel crazy for many seasons now and hearing the support from his mother was very touching.

I hope there will be a miles/hurley episode in which miles is surprised that hurley has a similar ability his. How cool would it be if hurley had really seen all those dead characters? I bet miles can find the cabin and see jacob.

One theory on the voices on the island - they are people who died on the island. It would be neat if miles and hurley could see or communicate with them.

One thing I noticed about ms. Hawking”s work at the end of the episode while she was doing her calculations was the room she was in. It looked an awful lot like a Dharma station…with the old computer there and the lighting and setup. As awesome as it was, I think people were more thrown off at seeing ms. Hawking and the work she was doing to notice this.

Oh, and can’t wait for your thoughts on this last episode. : )

GREAT recap. I’m still wondering about Locke. I bet bringing him back to the Island will bring him back to life, but why? Is he going to live forever like Richard? So odd.
