Jughead

LOCKE: All right. All right. What year is it right now?

RICHARD: It’s 1954.

LOCKE: All right. May 30, 1956–2 years from now–that’s the day I’m born–Tustin, California, and if you don’t believe me, I suggest you come and visit me.

At last, an explaination as to why Richard went to visit Locke when he was first born. As Locke said this I couldn’t help but feel excited - at last, we’re getting somewhere! But this meeting opens up another set of questions.

Is Locke really supposed to be leader?

Jughead

Let’s look at this from Richards point of view. There you are, in the middle of what seems to be a war, when an old man arrives claiming he’s spoken to you in the future. He tells you that he was sent by Jacob and that he will become leader of The Others, and tells you to visit him when he was born to clarify his story. Then, just as you are in midst conversation with this man, he disappears right in front of you.

50 years later Flight 815 crashes on the island and who should be one of the survivors? That same crazy man you met fifty years earlier.

Jughead

In between that time, Richard did go to visit John Locke when he was first born. And when Locke was about 7, Richard visited him again to test him. He gave a young Locke a variety of items to choose from and told him to pick something that belonged to him. Amongst these items was the compass which Locke received from Future Richard to give to Past Richard.

At the time, Locke hadn’t seen the compass before and so headed straight for the knife. Richard, seemingly dissapointed with Lockes choice, left. He obviously expected Locke to pick the compass because he thought that compass belonged to him.

After years of monitoring Locke he finally arrives on the island and Richard is pleased that their new leader has come to take the place of Ben.

But… what if Locke hadn’t gone back to the 1950s?
If Locke hadn’t gone back in time and had that chat with Richard, Richard would have been none-the-wiser and so therefore wouldn’t have pursued Locke like he had.

It seems that Richard only thought he was supposed to be leader because Future Locke told him so, but Future Locke only thinks he’s leader because Future Richard told him so, but Future Richard only thinks that because he met John Locke 50 years earlier who told him so. And so on and so on.

And, the compass…?

Jughead

RICHARD: Second thing–no, no, pay attention. Next time we see each other, I’m not gonna recognize you. All right? You give me this. All right?

(Richard hands Locke something small, something we’ve seen before.)

LOCKE: What is this?

RICHARD: It’s a compass.

In 2004/2005 Richard Alpert gave John Locke a compass. Richard tells Locke to give it to him the next time they meet in the past. Locke then travels in time 50 years prior to this meeting and gives Richard Alpert the compass. Locke then dissapears leaving Richard with the compass, which he gives back to John in 50 years time.

So, where did the compass come from? Richard only had it because Locke gave it to him but Locke only had it because Richard gave it to him.

Answers on a postcard please!

Charles Widmore

Jughead

RICHARD: (To Jones) Put the gun down.

JONES: What? Richard, you can’t seriously trust him.

(Richard walks over to Jones and slaps the rifle down.)

RICHARD: I said… put the gun down, Widmore.

LOCKE: (To Jones) Your name is Widmore? Charles Widmore?

WIDMORE: What’s it to you?

LOCKE: Nothing. Nice to meet you.

I had a feeling this British guy would be Charles Widmore and felt an air of smugness when it was revealed to be true.

We learn from “the present” that Charles Widmore was funding Daniel Faraday’s experiments and has been doing so for the past 10 years. Was this because of his encounter with Faraday on the island?

Widmore selected Daniel, Charlotte, and Miles to go on the freighter in 2004, so was the reason for this because he knew they had to be there? Because he’d met them 50 years earlier?

Jughead

Another point I’d like to make, and this is inspired by this great theory, is that Charles Widmore had stated in The Shape of Things to Come, that he has kept a bottle of MacCutcheon by his bed ever since the nightmares started.

Like Desmond in Because You Left, Charles Widmore could be experiencing new memories. We know that he has been funding Daniel Faradays experiments for 10 years, so perhaps he started having these new memories 10 years ago?

This could also be why he was always trying to push Desmond away from Penny, because he knew that Desmond had to end up on that island? Although, if this were true, he would have had to have met Desmond on the island… or would he? Perhaps if he meets Faraday and co. in the 50s again they will mention Desmond.

They could even tell them their whole story and how Flight 815 crashed on the island. Perhaps Charles Widmore had planned ahead for the fake wreckage of Flight 815 because he knew it was going to happen?

Ellie

Jughead

FARADAY: You know what? You’re right. I’m–I’m sorry. It’s just… you look so much like… someone I used to know.

ELLIE: Someone other than the girl you just professed your love for? Well, aren’t you the Romeo.

FARADAY: Far from it, believe me.

From this conversation I am thinking that Ellie is Daniels mother. Remember Daniel had a rat named Eloise? Perhaps he named it after his mother? (Although that isn’t the biggest compliment in the world now is it?).

And, after Desmonds meeting with Widmore in the present, we know that Daniels mother is in LA. So that all leads us to Ms. Hawking and Ellie are the same person and she is in fact, Daniels mother!

If Widmore started having nightmares 10 years earlier, perhaps Ms. Hawking did too? That’s how she knows all about Desmonds “destiny”. Also, if she is in cahoots with Brother Campbell then perhaps he was on the island in the 1950s too.

What if Widmore, Hawking and Campbell started experiencing these new memories at the same time and had to try and keep the events that lead up to it the same?

Could this be why Daniel was crying?

Jughead

If Ms. Hawking is Daniels mother then she could have told him all about how she met him on the island? She could even have told him about Flight 815, and that could explain why he was crying when he saw the wreckage of Flight 815 on the telly? Perhaps he thought this wreckage was real and thought his mother had lied to him about everything? All his research and experiments could have been based on what his mother had told him, and when he saw that it “wasn’t” true, he became upset because he felt his life had been based on a lie?

Where does Ben fit into all of this?

Jughead

Ben arrived on the island in the 1970s so if he ever met Widmore and Hawking they would have been on the island for about 20 years already. Did he and Hawking become close? Did they devise a plan together to get rid of Widmore?

When did Widmore and Hawking leave the island?
Miles stated in Because You Left that Charles had been looking for the island for 20 years. So, does that mean that he left the island in 1984? If so, how did the birth of Penny come about? Did he get someone pregnant on the island and then have her leave to have the baby safely? Or was he free to come and go just like Richard?

And when did Ms. Hawking leave the island? If she is Daniels mother persumably she would have had to leave the island to have him safely? If Daniel is in his 30s she would have had to leave in the 1970s? Or was she too also able to come and go as she pleased?

The Jughead

Jughead

FARADAY: If I try anything–what, you’re gonna–you’re gonna shoot me? Is that right? Yeah, that would be perfect because, of course, rifle fire right next to–what would you call this–hydrogen bomb? Yes, fantastic idea. Really… inspired. Okay, listen to me. Do you people have any access to lead or concrete?

ELLIE: For what?

FARADAY: There’s a crack in the casing. It needs to be filled with lead. You need to take it off this platform carefully and bury it.

ELLIE: You brought me all the way out here to tell us that we have to bury it? You told Alpert you could disarm that thing.

FARADAY: You don’t need to worry. You do what I say, you bury it, it won’t go off.

So, if Ellie really listend to Daniel then did they bury the Jughead? If the island is still intact in 50 years time then I persume they did just that. So does that mean the Jughead is still buried somewhere on the island when Flight 815 crashes? Is the Jughead the cause of some of the strange things we’ve seen on the island?

Miles’ ability to communicate with the dead

Jughead

MILES: We just walked over a fresh grave.

FARADAY: What?

MILES: Four U.S. soldiers, dead just under a month. Three of them were shot. One died of radiation poisoning.

FARADAY: Miles, hey, hey. Did any of them happen to mention what year it is?

We’ve always known that Miles has a special ability to communicate with the dead but how exactly does that work? Daniel asks him if any of them mention what year it was, so does this mean the dead are communicating with Miles? Or are the dead talking amongst themselves? And if Miles can hear them can he speak to them? Can he communicate with them telepathically? And why does Daniel treat this statement as a normal occurance? Daniel must’ve known about Miles’ ability beforehand, but why is it treated like it isn’t strange?

And just who is this woman?

Jughead

Desmond visits Oxford University and speaks with a woman regarding Daniel Faraday. That woman, who is speaking with a British accent, is the same woman that let Hurley onto Flight 815 at the last minute, who spoke with an Australian accent at that time. So, is she of some importance to the whole story? Or did Lost creators simply make a mistake and hire the same woman for a different part? It seems like such a big mistake to make to me, given the fact that Lost is dissected and discussed on a daily basis. So if she is of some importance… who is she?!

Daniels Experiments

Jughead

ABIGAIL: You wanna speak to Theresa?

DESMOND: Yeah, I got her name from a–a gentleman I met at Oxford University–um… Daniel Faraday.

(Abigail looks at Desmond sternly.)

ABIGAIL: Daniel Faraday? Well, why didn’t you say so? Please, you must come in.

DESMOND: Thanks.

(Desmond steps in and removes his cap and sunglasses. Abigail opens a sliding door and leads Desmond into a room where a monitor beeps steadily. Desmond looks aghast at a bedridden woman being fed by a male nurse. The woman is middle-aged, with blonde, curly hair. She was probably once attractive, but now she is an invalid. The woman’s eyes are open, and she accepts the spoon into her mouth, but she is otherwise unresponsive to those around her. The bed is a hospital bed and an array of medical machines lines the room.)

ABIGAIL: (Folding her arms) He didn’t tell you, did he?

DESMOND: No. No, he didn’t. Can she hear us?

ABIGAIL: No. Theresa’s away right now.

DESMOND: “Away”? What do you mean?

ABIGAIL: Well, sometimes she wakes up, thinks she’s 3, wants to know where her dolly is. Yesterday, she was talking to our dad. He died five years ago.

DESMOND: I’m sorry. Um, this was a mistake. I… I shouldn’t have come.

If Ms. Hawking told Daniel about what had happened to Charlotte on the island, was Daniel doing experiments on this girl to perhaps save Charlottes life? If he could get this girl to go through the same thing Charlotte is on the island, then maybe he was trying to find a way to prevent it?

Theresa seems to be suffering from what the island is - although it is her conscioussness that seems to be going back and forth in time. Does she need a constant to “fix” herself or she beyond repair? If she does need a constant why can’t it be her sister? But, saying that, if she is in need of a constant and hasn’t come accross one yet, why hasn’t she died like Minkowski? Perhaps her sister is her constant and is keeping her alive but she can’t seem to stop the time-jumping? Will Daniel ever find a way to cure what he’s done to her? And just how did he do it to her in the first place? Did he use the same machine on her as he did to Eloise?

Charlotte, Charlotte, Charlotte

Jughead

I’ve addressed this issue in every review I’ve written of the new season and yet it still hasn’t been addressed fully what is wrong with her. Is she suffering the same thing Theresa is? In Because You Left she told Daniel that she hadn’t had a nose bleed since she was little - could it be that with all this jumping back and forth in time it is affecting her younger self and so her younger self is suffering with nose bleeds? Perhaps going back and forth in time has changed something so that Charlotte was never born? But Daniel said you can’t change the future… so why is she the only one suffering these effects. Will she die?

Desmond and Penny

Jughead

It is revealed in this episode that Desmond and Penny have a little boy who they’ve named Charlie. This is a great homage to the late great Charlie Pace, but it could also be a little homage to Penny’s father, Charles.

Desmond goes on his mission to find Faradays mother but he learns from Widmore that she is in L.A. Desmond tries to pursuade Penny that he won’t pursue it any further, but she knows Desmond and tells him she’s going with him. Will they catch up with Faradays mother in L.A? Will they come accross the O6 and Ben? Ben told Widmore that he has plans to kill Penny so what will happen if they come accross him? Will Ben get revenge?

Conclusion
Another absolutely amazing episode! I think this one is actually my favourite of the season so far purely because we’ve been given some more indication as to what is going on and why. Although we’re not fully in the picture yet which is what I love about this show! Top stuff!
