KATE: Are you still going back to the Island?

JACK: Yeah. Yeah, I think I am.

KATE: Then I’m going with you.

JACK: Kate… what happened? Where’s Aaron? Where–

KATE: No, don’t ask questions. If you want me to go with you… you’ll never ask me that question again. You will never ask me about Aaron. Do you understand, Jack?

Only a few hours earlier Kate was adamant that she wasn’t going back to the island and was determined to keep Aaron safe. So what has happened in those few hours to make Kate change her mind? And where is/what has happened to Aaron? Could Richard Malkin’s warning of Aaron being surrounded by grave danger be coming true?

316

Let’s take a look at what he told Claire in the Season 1 Episode “Raised by Another”.

MALKIN: It is crucial that you, yourself, raise this child.

CLAIRE: You mean with Thomas? Is he..

MALKIN: The father of this child will play no part in its life, nor yours.

CLAIRE: So what exactly are you saying?

MALKIN: This child parented by anyone else, anyone other than you — danger surrounds this baby. . .

CLAIRE: Danger?

MALKIN: Your nature, your spirit, your goodness, must be an influence in the development of this child.

CLAIRE: If Thomas and I don’t get back together I’m putting this baby up for adoption. I just wanted to find out what would give the baby the happiest life.

MALKIN: There is no happy life — not for this child, not without you.

CLAIRE: I don’t. . .

MALKIN: It can’t be another. You mustn’t allow another to raise your baby.

Richard Malkin kept in constant contact with Claire throughout her pregnancy trying to pursuade her that she herself must raise her baby, then all of a sudden, a week or so before Flight 815, he tells her he knows of a couple in L.A. who will keep her baby safe. He arranges the flight and buys the ticket for Flight 815.

316

It has to be this flight. It can’t be any other. They’re already scheduled to meet you when you arrive. Flight 815. Flight 815.

Claire took the flight and landed on the island to where only she can raise her baby. Richard Malkin had got what he wanted, for Claire to raise her child. This meant that Richard Malkin knew the plane would crash - whether he is a real pyschic or is a similar entity to Ms. Hawking, it doesn’t matter. The fact is, he knew. Which leads me to believe that he knew grave danger surrounds this baby if anyone but Claire is to raise him.

Richard Malkin saw the danger surrounding Aaron and thought convincing Claire to go on Flight 815 would save him, but I think the danger surrounding Aaron is a consequence of Claire going on Flight 815. Perhaps Richard Malkins visions were like Desmonds, not quite coherent and in the wrong order. What he saw was a consequence of being on Flight 815 but he didn’t know it. Danger surrounds Aaron now because of Richard Malkin.

Going back to the island

316

ELOISE: Jack… the binder in your hands shows all the air routes that fly over the coordinates where I believe the Island will be in little more than a day from now. There’s a commercial airliner flying from L.A. to Guam. It’s going to go right through our window. Ajira Airways, Flight 316. If you have any hope of the Island bringing you back, it must be that plane. You all need to be on it. It must be that flight. [Sighs] If you… want to return, you need to recreate as best you can the circumstances that brought you there in the first place. That means as many of the same people as you are able to bring with you.

JACK: And what if we can’t get anyone else to come with us? What if we’re it?

ELOISE: All I can tell you is the result would be… unpredictable.

Ok, so I’d always assumed that the O6 needed to go back as a way of being the islands and/or the survivors constant. This new information kindof puts a different spin on things. What puzzles me is… why? Why do they have to re-create the circumstances that brought them there? Why do they need as many of the original survivors as possible? If this is true… why isn’t Walt on board?

316

What bothers me is the fact that Ben and Frank are on the plane. They weren’t onboard Flight 815, so why are they there? Ben, of course, is there because he wants to get back to his home. Frank, however, is there by either coincidence or fate. Either way, it seems it is his destiny to go back to the island. Unless of course, course correction is intervening and perhaps wants to kill Frank off. Afterall, he was supposed to be the pilot of Flight 815. (BTW, how different does Frank look without his beard?).

Still, the big question remains: why do they need to re-create Flight 815?

Oh Ben! What have you done?

316

JACK: Where are you going?

BEN: Oh, I made a promise to an old friend of mine–just a loose end that needs tying up. See you at the airport, Jack.

Has Ben killed Penny? Given that Ben knows quite a lot about everything, it’s safe to assume that he knows Desmond is in a relationship with Penny. Ben looked almost surprised to see Desmond there, and seemed in a hurry to do whatever that loose end is that needs tying up. Later, he makes a call from a phone box at a marina and just happens to be covered in blood. Did he follow Desmond to his boat where Penny and little Charlie are? Did he get his revenge?

316

Later, we see Sayid being escorted by a police woman onto Flight 316. Was he arrested for all the killings he’s made lately? Or because he had a run-in with Ben at the marina and was forced to kick some serious Ben-butt?! I’m hoping it’s the second option and that Ben didn’t get to Penny. If this is the case, however, it means Ben is more clever than we thought. Who’d thought that the police woman who had arrested Sayid would escort him onto that very plane?

The island isn’t done with you Desmond

316

Myself and the island have something in common: neither of us are done with Desmond ;)

DESMOND: I came here to deliver a message. Daniel Faraday–your son–sent me here. He wanted me to tell you that he and all the people on the Island need your help. He said that only you could help them. He didn’t say Jack. He didn’t say Sun. He didn’t say Ben. He said you.

ELOISE: But I am helping, dear.

DESMOND: Consider the message delivered.

ELOISE: I’m sorry to have to tell you this, Desmond, but the Island isn’t done with you yet.

If the island isn’t done with Desmond I’m guessing he’ll end up back there eventually, but by what means? Did Ben really kill Penny in a way to motivate Desmond back to the island to kill Ben in revenge? Does Charles Widmore have something to do with it? If Penny is alive and well and Desmond does go back to the island, what makes him change his mind, and will Penny and little Charlie go with him?

316

What purpose will Desmond serve by going back to the island? Will he have to push that button again or is he destined for much greater things?

It seems by Locke moving the island, the island has got stuck in the 1970s - will Desmond be the ultimate saviour given his past time-travel abilities? Will he be the one to save them all?

Hurley

316

JACK: Hurley. What are you doing here? How did you know about the…

HURLEY: All that matters is that I’m here, right?

Hurley is at the airport and knows exactly which flight to be on. He is also carrying a guitar case. One thing that could be concluded from him carrying a guitar case is so that it is a little “re-creation” of Flight 815. But how would Hurley know that he needs to re-create the conditions of Flight 815? He didn’t meet Ms. Hawking and we know he has avoided Ben the best he can. I’m guessing he’s had a little conversation with ghost Charlie. Charlie told him he needed to be on Flight 316, and as Charlie was his best friend on the island, he trusts him. I’m thinking he brought the guitar with him because he’s hoping he’ll meet up with Charlie again on the island, an alive Charlie.

Jin and the Dharma Initiative

316

At the end of the episode, a Dharma van pulls up to where Jack, Kate, and Hurley are. Out of it comes Jin who is armed and wearing a Dharma Initiative suit. Since Locke turned the wheel I’m guessing Jin and the others got stuck in the 1970s when the DI exsisted. It seems they may have been there for a while for Jin to be an employee who seems ready to shoot at imposters - so just how long have Jin and the others been stuck in the 1970s? Have they been there long enough for Jin to fully learn English? How will they get back to the future?
