The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham - Lost Season 5 Episode 7 Review
Written by admin on March 2, 2009
In this wonderful episode we get to see the events that led up to the death of “Jeremy Bentham”, and his visits to the O6 (except Sun). It was interesting to see Charles Widmore and Matthew Abaddon together (finally we find out who Abaddon is/was really working for) and how they seem to have a similar interest in Locke. Or do they? While this episode gave us the answers to Lockes mysterious death, it takes us further into the mystery of Charles Widmore - is he good? Or is he evil?
Let’s start at the beginning… sort of
LOCKE: You’ve been watching them?
WIDMORE: I’m deeply invested in the future of the Island, John. So, yes, I’ve been watching them. I wouldn’t mention I’m involved in this. I can’t imagine what they think of me, having listened to Benjamin’s lies.
LOCKE: How do I know that you’re not the one who’s lying?
WIDMORE: I haven’t tried to kill you. Would you say the same for him?

So, Charles Widmore has been watching the O6 since they returned from the island. First question is, why? Why would he watch the O6 so closely? Did he know that they needed to go back to the island and was watching them to keep them safe? Or was he watching them so that if they did go back to the island he could find out how?
We know that Ben has also been watching the O6 - could the people watching them be working for both Ben and Charles? It seems too convenient to have two sets of people watching each member of the O6 and neither have discovered the other.
LOCKE: What makes you think I’m so special?
WIDMORE: Because you are.

Why does Charles Widmore think that Locke is special? Is it because he met him 50 years earlier from his time travelling days? Maybe it’s because Locke mentioned Jacob? Or could it be that Widmore, much like Ben, is manipulating Locke? Lieing to him for his own personal gain?
Surely we can’t have 2 scheming liars on the show… can we? One of them must be telling the truth… mustn’t they?
WIDMORE: Because there’s a war coming, John. And if you’re not back on the Island when that happens, the wrong side is going to win.

Ok, so in 1954 Charles Widmore meets John Locke for the very first time. This was their only encounter with each other up until Locke moved the island.
What if, when Locke arrives back at the island, it is in the same time as the DI or earlier, and he helps a young Charles Widmore and “The Others” in a war? That is how Widmore knows a war is coming, and if Locke isn’t there they will lose. Perhaps the whole fate of the island depends on Locke winning that war? Perhaps Locke is special afterall…?
Maybe this is the reason why Widmore has kept an eye on the O6 since their return because he knew they would also play a part in this war. Could this also tie in with his feelings toward Desmond? If Desmond also returns then he could also have a role to play in the war, and Widmore felt that him getting involved with Penny would distract Desmond from his true “destiny”?
Speaking of Destiny

ABADDON: You’re ready to talk about it now, huh? John… you’re not really gonna pretend you don’t remember that I was an orderly in the hospital right after your accident? That I was the one who told you to go on your walkabout? The same walkabout that put you on the plane that crashed on that Island?
LOCKE: No. I remember.
ABADDON: I help people get to where they need to get to, John. That’s what I do for Mr. Widmore.
Ok, so we all knew about Abaddon pursuading Locke to go on a Walkabout, and we all know that that is what led him to the island. Abaddon does appear to help people get to where they need to be.
Are there other people like Abaddon who help people get to where they need to be. People like, say Christian, for example?

We all know Christian has had many runnings with the passengers of Flight 815. Let’s take a look at some of his history and connections with the passengers:
- He is the father of both Jack Shepherd and Claire Littleton.
- He took Ana Lucia with him to Australia.
- He had a chat to Sawyer in a bar in Australia.
What if, he worked for Widmore and had a mission to get certain people onto Flight 815, to get to where they needed to be?
What if he commited suicide knowing that he would end up on the island and be ressurected?

Other people who could have the same job role are: Richard Malkin (he pursuaded Claire to be on that flight), Brother Campbell and Eloise Hawking (both had a role in guiding Desmonds path).
The thing that bothers me about this is, the show has centered on course correction and destiny, but if there are people guiding the passengers of Flight 815 to where they needed to be, then there is no such thing as course correction and destiny. Am I Right?
The Exit

WIDMORE: Yeah.
LOCKE: How did you know I’d be there?
WIDMORE: Well, that’s the exit.

When Ben arrived in Tunisia there didn’t seem to be any camera’s around him. Was there a different “exit” in Tunisia that Widmore was unaware of, or were there camera’s there and we just didn’t see them? It may explain the two men who approached Ben shortly after he arrived there, and why Ben killed them. He probably knew they’d be part of Widmores work force.
I’m the leader of the gang, I am
LOCKE: The Others?
WIDMORE: They’re not the “Others” to me. They’re my people. We protected the Island peacefully for more than three decades. But then I was exiled… by him… just as you were.

Miles indicated that Widmore had been searching for the island for the past 20 years. This means that Widmore might have left in 1984. If he spent 3 decades protecting the island this would take the year back to 1954: the year he first met Locke. Given the fact that Widmore claimed he knew the island like the back of his hand (or something to that effect), I’m thinking he may have been on the island for a few years prior to 1954.
Anyway, the point I’m trying to get to is, both Locke and Ben travelled forward in time when they moved the island, so I’m making the same assumption with Widmore. If he arrived back in the real world in 1984, he may have moved the island in 1982, or perhaps earlier. I’m not sure if there is any significance in this but I just thought I’d throw it out there incase it meant something.
Johns meeting with Walt

LOCKE: Hi, Walt.
WALT: What happened?
LOCKE: I hurt my leg. You don’t seem surprised to see me.
WALT: I’ve been having dreams about you. You were on the Island, wearing a suit, and there are people all around you. They wanted to hurt you, John.
LOCKE: Good thing they’re just dreams.
WALT: Is my dad… is he back on the Island? I haven’t talked to him in three years. I figured he must’ve gone back.
LOCKE: Um, last I heard, your dad was on a freighter near the Island.
WALT: So why’d you come to see me?
LOCKE: I just wanted to make sure you were okay.
WALT: Yeah. I’m doing pretty good. Well, I gotta go. It was good seeing you, John.
LOCKE: Yeah. Take care.
In the Season 4 finale Walt pays Hurley a visit and tells him that Jeremy Bentham came to see him. Now, this may mean nothing, but not once in Locke and Walts conversation did he mention he was going around calling himself Jeremy Bentham.
It could be that we find out Walt did some digging before visiting Hurley. Perhaps he was visited by Ben to try and pursuade him to go back to the island. Afterall, Abaddon hinted that Walt was also needed. Based on this conversation I’m thinking we haven’t seen the last of Walt.
Flash… Ahaaa

Ok, so we can all safely say that among the dissapearing people are Jack, Kate and Hurley. But what about Sun, Sayid and Frank? Assuming they’re needed just as much as Jack, Kate and Hurley it would cause confusion if they didn’t dissapear as well, wouldn’t it?

The O5 were sat in first class and from what I can remember there was only Ceasar and Ilana in first class as well. Persuming Ceasars statement of “some of us saw it happen to other people” meant other people apart from him and Ilana, wouldn’t that mean that people dissapeared from the other coach on the plane? If this is true, who are they and why are they important? Could one of these people be Walt?
Conclusion
After revealing what happened to Locke after he left the island it appears the show can now progress to show us what’s going to happen now that they’re back, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next episode. I can’t believe we’re almost half way through!
