Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.

Character Episode: Jack

Quick Recap on Flashback:
Jack is at the hospital when two patients are rushed in who have been in a car accident. They’re both in critical condition but Jack only has time to save one. He saves a woman called Sarah who has been paralysed by the accident.

Later Jack speaks with Sarah about her condition and is quite blunt with her about it. Jacks father over hears and speaks with Jack about his bedside manner. Jack tells his father that he doesn’t want to give Sarah false hope that she will ever walk again.

Jack speaks with Sarahs fiance about her condition and the fact that she will probably need professional care for the rest of her life. Her fiance seemed daunted about the fact that he may have to give up his life to take care of her. Later, in the operating theatre as Sarah is put to sleep for an operation, she tells Jack that he is invited to her wedding. Something seems to click in him and he declares to her that he is going to fix her.

After the operation Jack lets off steam by doing a “Tour de Stade” and while he is running he trips up one of the steps. A guy called Desmond who has been running as well stops to give Jack some water. They have a conversation about Sarah and when Desmond leaves he tells Jack he’ll “see you in another life, brother”.

Jack waits by Sarah’s bedside for her to wake up. He tells her the operation was unsuccessful but she seems to think he is joking as she is able to feel her toes. As Jack prods her toes and legs and Sarah feels it, it soon becomes apparant that Jack did fix her afterall.

Quick Recap on Island:
A man is seen waking up and doing a routine of making breakfast, working out, listening to music and he sits at a computer and hits the “execute” button. He injects himself with some sort of medicine but is interupted by a loud noise. He puts on a suit, loads himself with a gun, and uses some sort of telescope to zoom in on something… That something being Jack and Locke peering down “The Hatch” that they just blew up with dynamite.

Locke is curious to go down there but Jack tells him that it’s pointless. He tells everyone to head back to the caves to let everyone know what is going on.

At the caves Charlie is telling everyone that “The Others” aren’t coming and that Rouseauu lit the fire herself. Shannon is wandering around asking people if they’ve seen Vincent and she wanders off into the jungle.

At The Hatch Kate discovers that the inside of “The Hatch Door” says Quarantine on it.

Meanwhile, Sayid and Shannon are in the jungle looking for Vincent. They hear him barking and Sayid goes off to try and circle around him. While he is away Shannon is shocked to see a soaking wet Walt saying something to her backwards. Shannon tries to speak with him but when Sayid comes back Walt dissapears.

When they get back to the caves Shannon tells everyone what she saw and says that she heard whispers. Everyone seems worried and bombards her with questions. As they’re talking about what happened Jack arrives back with Kate, Locke and Hurley.

Jack tells everyone that they’re going to stay at the caves and that they’ve got guns if needed. He reassures everyone that when the sun comes up they’ll all be there to see it.

Man of Science, Man of Faith

As Jack is speaking with everyone Locke gets some cable as he plans on taking it back to The Hatch as a means of getting down there. Jack is annoyed with Locke but is unable to do anything about it.

Later Kate speaks with Jack and tells him she is going to The Hatch to make sure Locke is ok.

When Kate arrives at The Hatch Locke tells her he’s been expecting her. They decide that Kate should go down The Hatch first as she is lighter. As he lowers her down Locke briefly loses grip of the cable and Kate drops her flashlight. Locke begins to lower her down again but suddenly Kate shouts for him to stop. She tells Locke she thinks there’s something down there and then a floodlight comes on. Something pulls Kate down and then the floodlight goes off. Locke is left shouting for Kate but she is no longer there.

Later Jack tells Hurley he is going back to The Hatch. When he arrives both Kate and Locke aren’t there. He decides to use the cable and lower himself down The Hatch to investigate. As he gets down there he walks along a corridor and notices a painting on the wall. He walks into a dome-shaped room and then all of a sudden a song comes on at full blast.

Locke appears with someone holding a gun to him. The man tells Jack to put his gun down or he’ll shoot at Locke. Jack hesitates and the the man says “Lower your gun or I’ll blow his damned head off, brother”. Jack realises that this man is the same man he met when he did his “Tour de Stade” - it is Desmond.

Things to note

Walt
When Walt appears to Shannon he speaks backwards and says something like “Push the button. Don’t push the button. Bad.”

In a later episode Bea Klugh asks Michael if Walt has ever been anywhere he wasn’t supposed to be. This suggests that Walt may have the ability to project himself to places he shouldn’t be. Given that at the time he appeared to Shannon he’d just been kidnapped by The Others from the raft.

Walt also appears to Locke in Through the Looking Glass when he was about to kill himself. Walt pursuades Locke that he has to get up because has has work to do.

Now that we know that throughout Season 5 Jacob’s nemesis had used Lockes form, there’s reason to question that perhaps when Walt appeared to Locke he too had been Jacob’s nemesis using his form.

This leads us to two possibilities: either Walt can appear in places he shouldn’t, or it was Jacob’s nemesis using his form. Either way I’m sure there’s alot more to learn about Walt.

The Accident
The man that died whilst Jack was saving Sarah was Adam Rutherford who is Shannon’s father.

In this episode Jack “fixed” Sarah. Given what we know now about Jacob and his apparant “choosing” and “saving” of people, perhaps it was he who fixed Sarah?
