Note: this is a look back at earlier episodes to give a general review and to write about the mysteries as they unfold.

Character Episode: Locke

Quick Recap on Flashback:
Locke is at a therapy group and gets angry with a girl there who seems upset about someone stealing $30 from her. He tells everyone his story about Anthony Cooper conning him for his kidney which seems to make everyone elses problems seem tedious in comparison. After the meeting he gets talking to a lady called Helen and they seem to hit it off immediately.

Orientation

During the beginning of their relationship Locke begins sneaking out of Helens house in the middle of the night. He tells her he has trouble sleeping in a strange bed. What he’s really doing, however, is driving to Anthony Coopers house and sitting outside in his car.

This particular time, Anthony comes out of the house and gets into Lockes car. He tells him that he thought Lockes visits were funny at first, but now they’re just annoying. He is horrible to Locke and tells him to get over it. Locke is understandably upset.

Orientation

After 6 months of being together Helen gives Locke a key to her place but tells him that he must stop visiting Anthony’s house. Helen had followed him the night before and the news startles Locke but he tells her he’ll stop.

A few weeks later Locke leaves Helens place in the middle of the night and parks outside Anthony Coopers house. A car bumps into the back of his while he’s parked which turns out to be Helen. She grabs Lockes car key out of the ignition and throws it over the gate. Helen tells Locke that he’s scared of moving forward but he needs to take a leap of faith. Locke seems to accept this and decides to take Helens help.

Quick Recap on Island:
Micheal and Sawyer are knocked out by Mr Eko and are dragged into the middle of the jungle and dumped into a pit. Michael asks them where Walt is but receives no response.

Orientation

At The Hatch the confrontation between Desmond, Jack and Locke escalates but Kate has managed to lower herself from a vent to get behind Desmond and knock him down. While he falls he shoots his weapon and it hits the computer breaking it. Desmond panics and starts looking for some components to fix the computer. Locke tells Kate to find Sayid as he will probably be able to help.

When Kate leaves Jack grabs the components and asks Desmond to explain exactly what is going on and how he got there. Desmond explains that 3 years earlier he was on a race around the world on a sail boat which crashed on the island. A guy called Kelvin grabbed him and dragged him to The Hatch and as soon as they got there Kelvin entered the numbers and pushed the button. Kelvin had said they were doing it to save the world. Desmond explains that Kelvin died and that he has been pushing the button ever since.

Orientation

Jack is annoyed with the explaination and is angry with Locke who seems to believe it. Desmond tells them that there is a film which explains it. They decide to take a look at it.

In the pit Michael and Sawyer are asking Jin questions about “The Others”. Because Jin can’t speak English he was left making hand gestures to describe what happened to him. Michael makes out that Jin was blindfolded. Saywer gets Michael and Jin to push him up so he can see what’s going on, but as they do so the pit cover opens and a woman is pushed in. It’s Ana Lucia.

Orientation

At The Hatch Jack and Locke begin watching the film. It is a Dharma Initiative Orientation video explaining what to do in The Hatch, or The Swan as it is called. The film features a man who introduces himself as Marvin Candle and he explains what The Swan is for and speaks of an Incident. Parts of the film are missing so some of it is incoherent. After watching it Locke muses that they will have to watch that again, while Jack walks away.

Orientation

At the pit Ana Lucia speaks with Sawyer and co. and they tell her they are survivors of a plane crash. She seems surprised and asks them if it was Flight 815. Sawyer and co. realise that she was also on the plane. Michael asks her if she’s seen Walt, but she says she hasn’t. Sawyer shows her his gun and tells her the next time they open the pit they’re going to get a surprise.

Back at The Swan, Jack starts asking Desmond questions again and tries to pursuade him that the whole thing isn’t real. Desmond tells Jack that every single day he wonders whether it is real or not, but pushes the button regardless.

Desmond has finished trying to fix the computer and when he turns it on the power goes out. Desmond tells them that it’s over and grabs some medication and other things and leaves The Swan. Jack goes after him leaving a confused Locke on his own. He gets angry and shouts out “what am I supposed to do?!”.

Orientation

Later, Kate arrives with Sayid and Hurley. Locke asks Sayid for his help in fixing the computer, so Sayid gets Hurley and Kate to look for a breaker box to turn the electric back on.

At the pit Sawyer discusses his plan of action when Ana Lucia begins questioning him about the gun. He explains that there was a marshall on the plane. She doesn’t seem to believe him and out of the blue she elbows Sawyer in the face, gets the gun, and shouts to Mr Eko “coming out!”. He throws down a rope for her and he pulls her up.

Orientation

In the jungle Jack has caught up with Desmond. Desmond remembers that he forgot to tell him the numbers to enter into the computer so he lets Jack know what they are. Jack isn’t interested in the numbers and tells Desmond he doesn’t know what he’s running from. This triggers Desmonds memory and he remembers his meeting with Jack in LA. When Desmond asks about Sarah Jack gets upset and tells Desmond that he married her. Desmond is sympathetic, and tells Jack he’ll see him in another life, before running off into the jungle again.

At the Swan, Kate finds the breaker box and Sayid is able to fix the computer. Locke tries to remember the code and when he starts saying the numbers Hurley starts to worry, but when Locke says the wrong number Hurley is quite happy to let him carry on. That is, until Jack returns and corrects Locke.

Orientation

Locke tells Jack to press the execute button but Jack is reluctant that he won’t. Locke tells him he needs to take a leap of faith, and when the timer nearly hits zero Jack gives in and pushes the button. Locke says he’ll take the first shift.

Things to note

We now know that Dr Marvin Candle’s real name is Dr Pierre Chang and is the father of Miles Straum (who makes his first appearence in Season 4). Dr Pierre Chang was around in the 70s and was acquainted with Sawyer, Kate, Jack, Hurley, Miles and Juliet (who his introduced in Season 3) during their time travels in Season 5. He mentions The Incident in The Swan Orientation video which we now know was caused by the H-Bomb which Jack threw down the hole, and which Juliet detonated.

When Desmond speaks with Jack about The Swan having electromagnetism properties, he tells Jack that every time he walks past the wall his fillings hurt. In Season 5 we see one of the Dharma Initiative die whilst working on The Swan station by one of his fillings being pulled through his brain.

During his time alone in The Swan Locke gets angry and starts shouting, and seems to question somebody or something about what he’s supposed to do. We all know Locke has a special connection with the Island and at the time it seemed he was asking the Island what he’s supposed to do, but after Season 5 I can’t help but wonder if Locke had somehow come accross Jacobs other half previous to this scene and had been told he’s special and has a great purpose on the island.
