1991
Sayid

In an Iraqi bunker a Republican Guard commander, Tariq, urges his soldiers to keep destroying documents. The door is kicked in and a squad of American soldiers captures the Iraqi soldiers. When Sayid says there isn’t a commanding officer present, the soldier thinks Sayid is lying, and knocks him out with his rifle’s butt.

Sayid is taken aside by another solider, Kate’s father, for questioning and is asked where Tariq, is. Sayid, tells the Americans that Tariq fled to Hillah long before they arrived. The Americans lead him into a room, where he finds Tariq, tied to a chair in front of him.

Tariq refuses to cooperate, ordering Sayid in Arabic to steal the guard’s gun and shoot as many of the Americans as he can. Sayid doesn’t do this, but tells the Americans simply that Tariq doesn’t have their answer.

Kelvin “Joe” Inman introduces himself to Sayid.

Sayid agrees to interrogate Tariq after being shown a DIA video tape, which shows a village of people dying from a sarin gas attack that was ordered by Tariq. The man knows that Sayid had family in that village.

1994
Locke

Locke joins a farming commune in Northern California and picks up a hitch hiker called Eddie. After six weeks of living with them, leaders Mike and Jan find out that Eddie is really a policeman, and is there to gather information on them for growing marijuana. Locke promises to take care of the problem by seemingly killing Eddie, but he proves unable to pull the trigger.

Michael

Michael and his pregnant girlfriend, Susan, are out shopping for some baby things. Michael is clearly excited about becoming a father and tells Susan he’d like to call the baby Walter after his father. She agrees, as long as he keeps her surname.

Special

When Walt is just a few months old Susan tells Michael she has been offered a job in Amsterdam and wants to take it. Michael is upset as he knows that if she takes the job she will take Walt with her. Michael tries to pursuade Susan not to take the job and to work out their problems, but she tells him she’s already accepted it.

Special

1995
Desmond

A week before his wedding to Ruth, Desmond gets drunk and is found in the street by Brother Campbell. Desmond decides to join the monastery as he thinks it was a calling.

After a drunken night Desmond is expelled from the monastery. He speaks with Brother Campbell and there is a photograph of him and a Ms. Hawking on his desk.

Later on, Desmond meets Penelope Widmore - he helps her load a van with crates of wine.

1996
Michael

Michael is on the phone to Susan and he asks to speak to Walt. He can hear the sound of a mans voice in the background and when asked who he is, Susan tells him it’s her new boyfriend, Brian. Michael is angry and tells her he’ll be coming to Amsterdam to get Walt, and as he puts the phone down and walks accross the street he is hit by a car.

Special

A few months Later Michael is still recovering in hospital when he is visited by Susan. Susan tells him that she and Brian are getting married and that he wants to adopt Walt. Michael is upset by this but sees he has no choice but to let Walt go.

Special

Desmond

Desmond asks Charles Widmore for his permission to marry his daughter Penny but is refused, meets Charlie busking on a London street and finally breaks up with Penny.

(Desmond later goes back into 1996 after turning the failsafe key, and considers changing his history by proposing to Penny. As he goes to buy a ring for Penny, Ms. Hawking reminds him he “has second thoughts and walks right out that door” and confronts him about his destiny. Ms. Hawking seems to know alot about Desmonds future. Ultimately, Desmond decides that his fate is out of his hands and breaks up with Penny. Later in the pub, he has second thoughts about what he’s just done and decides to go and see Penny to change his future, but just as he does he get’s whacked over the head by a cricket bat and ends up in the jungle again.)

1997
Sayid

Sayid is seen interrogating a man to tell him the truth about a terrorist attack. Afterwards, after seeing the way Sayid works, his commanding officer tells him they’re going to promote him. In the midst of conversation, Sayid notices a woman being brought to the detention facility.

Solitary

Later, we see Sayid start an interrogation on this woman but she says something to Sayid and makes him realise that he knows her from his childhood. Her name is Nadia, and apparantly when they were children she used to push him in the mud because he used to ignore her. Despite being moved by this revelation, Sayid continues to interrogate her.

A few weeks later Sayid brings food to where Nadia is being held and tells her if she implicates the others in the attack she may be able to walk free. Nadia doesn’t give in, however, and a short while later Sayid is ordered to execute her.

Solitary

He gives her a black bag to put over her head and escorts her to where she will be executed, but when they’re alone he gives her the opportunity to leave. She tries to pursuade him to go with her but he explains that if he did, they will kill his family. Before Nadia has a chance to leave they are interupted by his commanding officer and Sayid is forced to shoot him. Sayid then shoots himself in the leg so that the story of Nadia escaping will be more believable.

Solitary

Before Nadia escapes she gives Sayid a photograph with the words “You will find me in the next life, if not in this one” written in Arabic on the back.

Late 1990s
Locke

John Locke is approached by a woman who says she is his mother. She tells him that he was immaculately conceived. John, who didn’t believe her, had her checked out and found out where his real father is. John went to see his father, Anthony Cooper, and began a loving father-son relationship with him.

After discovering his father needed a kidney transplant - John immediately volunteered to donate his kidney to his father. After waking up from surgery Locke saw his father had gone, and after visiting him at home it became clear that his father wanted nothing more to do with him. It turns out that it was all a con, which Johns mother confirms when she tells John he’d been setup.

Later, John joins a therapy group, where he meets Helen. He and Helen begin dating, but John was still distraught about his father and would continue to visit his house and sit outside in his car. Helen knew what was happening and gave a John an ultimatum - his father, or her.

John encounters Nadia around the time John decides to propose to Helen. At this time Anthony Cooper stages his death. After being lured into one of his fathers cons Helen decides to break up with John.

Jin & Sun

Sun is at a party where Jin is working as a waiter. He passes her a note and meet up in a quiet spot a little later. Sun wants elope with Jin but Jin refuses as her father wouldn’t like it.

House of the Rising Sun

A few days later Jin is in the office of Sun’s father and he is being quizzed about why he wishes to marry Sun. Jin tells Sun’s father that he is ambitious but when he accepts a job from him, Sun’s father asks him why he should let his daughter marry someone who sells his dreams so easily. And to that, the answer was simple, “She is my dream”, he says. Sun’s father welcomes Jin to the company.

In Translation

Jin meets Sun and tells her he’s been to see her father and has agreed to allow them to get married. There is a condition though: Jin has to work for her father. This seemed to upset Sun but was happy when he gave her a diamond ring to mark the occasion.

House of the Rising Sun

A while later it’s the wedding reception and Jin and Sun have a quiet moment alone. Sun is wanting to go on her honeymoon straight away but Jin insists that he must make a good impression with her father and finish off his training at work before thinking about their honeymoon.

In Translation

Charlie

Charlie is at a church giving his confession to the priest. His confession leads him to the conclusion that he must leave the band he’s a member of, Drive Shaft, as it seems it is a bad influence on his lifestyle. However, when leaving the confession room he notices his brother Liam waiting for him. Liam tells him they’ve been offered a recording contract.

The Moth

Outside, still discussing the possibility of becoming major rock stars, Charlie agrees to stay with the band on one condition: if anything goes wrong, they walk away.

A while later, when Drive Shaft are major stars, they’re performing live on stage their hit single “You All Everybody”. Liam interferes with Charlie’s solo in the chorus and later causes a rift between the two. Liam reassures Charlie that he is still the rock god of the band and that he was just lost in the moment. Liam then wanders off with a female fan and Charlie notices him holding some heroin.

The Moth

At another venue, before their show is due to start, Charlie tells Liam that he’s had enough and wants out. But Liam is unresponsive and tells Charlie that all he is is the bass player - nobody knows who the bass player is. Liam storms out leaving Charlie upset and as he sits down he sees some heroin on the table. Touching it, is seems that this is when Charlie’s addiction started.

The Moth

1999
Desmond

Desmond completes his prison sentence and is dishonorably discharged from the military. Charles Widmore immediately attempts to bribe Desmond to run away and forget Penelope Widmore.
