Pre-Island September 2004
Hurley is having a meeting with his financial advisor who tells Hurley that every one of his stocks is up, his interest in orange futures skyrocketed after the tropical storms hit Florida, and that he is now the majority shareholder in a box company in Tustin. While he’s there, someone falls out of a window in a room above them. Hurley tells his financial advisor that he thinks the money is cursed, but when he asks Hurley how he came up with the numbers, Hurley begins to realise that it isn’t the money that’s cursed, it is the numbers.

Hurley goes to see a guy called Leonard who is in a mental hospital. Leonard seems to be mumbling something but it isn’t quite clear what until Hurley asks him where he got the numbers from: Leonard is mumbling the numbers over and over again. When Hurley tells Leonard he used the numbers to play the lottery, Leonard seems panicked. He tells Hurley he shouldn’t have done that and now he’s “opened the box”. Leonard needs to be taken away because he’s so worked up, but manages to tell Hurley to find a guy called Sam Toomey who lives in Australia.

Hurley goes all the way to Australia and finds where Sam Toomey lives. Unfortunately, after arriving at the house, he learns that Sam is no longer alive. Instead, he speaks with Sam’s wife, Martha. He asks her about the numbers and she tells Hurley how Sam and Leonard had heard the numbers at a listening station in the South Pacific 16 years earlier, and had used the numbers in a competition to guess how many beans there were in a jar. Turns out that the number was exact, right to the last bean, and he won a lot of money.

Unfortunately, afterwards, they were on the way home and they were in a car accident. Martha lost a leg, but Sam was completely fine. Ever since a lot of bad things happened to them, and Sam would always blame it on the numbers. Hurley explains that he thinks he’s under the same curse, only to be told by Martha that there was no curse and that “you make your own luck”.
Sun is at home showing a “decorator” around the apartment, and when they’re in the bedroom she gives Sun some documents and tells her when she’s at Sydney Airport, at 11.15am, a car will be waiting for her outside. She must disappear until her family think she is dead. It’s soon become clear she is going to leave Jin.

Susan, Brian and Walt are now in Australia. Walt is talking about his school project on Australian birds but Susan and Brian seem distracted when Susan begins to feel ill. Walt seems to be annoyed that they’re not paying attention and tells them repeatedly “you’re not looking”… when an Australian bird hits the floor of the balcony and dies. It just so happens that the bird is the same one Walt has been looking at in his book.

A week later Brian visits Michael in New York and tells him Susan has died and that she wanted him to look after Walt now. Michael gets angry as he knows this is a lie and Brian explains that he never really wanted to adopt Walt. He tells Michael that when Walt is around things happen, and that he’s different somehow. Michael is angry and upset that he never got to be Walts father, and is obviously distraught that Brian now wants nothing to do with Walt.

Michael makes his way to Australia to see Walt. Walts nanny gives Michael a box of letters that he’d sent over the years to Walt, but Susan had never given to him. When Michael meets Walt, Walt seems a bit cold towards him. He asks where Brian is. To protect Walts feelings Micheal lies and tells him that because he is his real father he has to be his legal guardian now.

Ana-Lucia is hired by Christian to be his bodyguard.
Locke is working at a Box Company and has boss called Randy who makes fun of Locke because Locke is going to Australia on a “Walkabout” and believes it is his destiny.

Later, Locke is in his bedroom having a phone conversation with a woman called Helen. Locke tells her he’s bought two tickets to Australia, hinting that one of them was for her. This seemed to agitate Helen and tells Locke she’s enjoyed speaking with him but isn’t allowed to meet customers. Locke is upset that she only thinks of him as a customer and it’s obvious he has feelings for this woman, although it’s pretty clear they’ve never met.

When Locke is in Australia he is talking to the guy who arranges the Walkabout and tells Locke he can’t come along because of his “condition”. Locke is outraged and tells the guy that it’s his destiny and as the guy walks out of the room we’re shown that Locke, is infact, paralysed and in a wheel chair!

Sawyer lands in Australia, where the “real Sawyer” supposodly lives, and goes to see a man about a gun.
Sawyer goes to a Shrimp van to speak to the guy that works there: the guy that he believes is the real Sawyer. Frank is friendly and seems happy to speak with another American. While Frank is making some Shrimp for Sawyer, Sawyer looks like he is contemplating getting the gun and pulling the trigger, but changes his mind and walks away.

He goes to a bar where he gets to talking to… Christian Shepherd. They share a bottle of whiskey and their sorrows. Christian tells Sawyer of his bad relationship with his son, and although Sawyer is a bit more vague about his reasons for being in Australia, Christian convinces him that if he’s here to do something, then he has to do it.

That night Sawyer goes back to the shrimp place and finds Frank. Frank has his back turned to him and when Sawyer says “Sawyer” to him, he turns around and gets shot. Sawyer begins reading the letter to him, but Frank doesn’t know what he’s talking about. She went to see Richard Malkin to hear what his plan was. He told her there was a couple in L.A. who want to adopt the baby and that the baby would be safe in their care. Claire was obviously confused as to why he’s been telling her that only she should raise the baby and now he’s changed his mind. He gives her a ticket for Flight 815 and he tells her it must be that flight.

Apparantly when Shannon’s father died Boone’s mother took all the money and didn’t give any to Shannon, so this is Shannon’s way of getting back what she’s owed. A fight breaks out with Boone and Shannon’s boyfriend and when Shannon manages to stop them, Boone leaves.
